Abstract

There is provided herein an optical system for a tip section of a multi-sensor endoscope, the system comprising: a front-pointing camera sensor; a front objective lens system; a side-pointing camera sensor; and a side objective lens system, wherein at least one of said front and side objective lens systems comprises a front and a rear sub-systems separated by a stop diaphragm, said front sub-system comprises, in order from the object side, a first front negative lens and a second front positive lens, said rear sub-system comprises, in order from the object side, a first rear positive lens, an achromatic sub-assembly comprising a second rear positive lens and a third rear negative lens, wherein the following condition is satisfied: f (first rear positive lens) ≤1.8f, where f is the composite focal length of the total lens system and f (first rear positive lens) is the focal length of said first rear positive lens.

Claims (42)

1. A method of using a multi-sensor endoscope comprising:

positioning an optical system for a tip section of said multi-sensor endoscope to place a target area in view of the optical system, wherein positioning said optical system comprises:

positioning a front-pointing camera sensor and a front objective lens system of said optical system to place a front portion of said target area in view of said front-pointing camera sensor and said front objective lens system;

positioning a side-pointing camera sensor and a side objective lens system of said optical system to place a side portion of said target area in view of said side-pointing camera sensor and said side objective lens system;

wherein at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems comprises:

a first sub-system,

a second sub-system separated from said first sub-system by a stop diaphragm,

a lens holder, wherein the camera sensor for said at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems is attached to the lens holder, and wherein said lens holder has a passage extending therethrough,

a lens barrel, wherein said lens barrel receives said first and second sub-systems within a passage extending therethrough, and wherein said passage of said lens holder receives said lens barrel, and

wherein said first sub-system comprises a plurality of lenses within said passage of said lens barrel,

wherein said second sub-system comprises a plurality of lenses within said passage of said lens barrel, and wherein a lens of said plurality of lenses of said second sub-system is the lens closest to said camera sensor for said at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems; and

changing a distance between at least one of:

(a) said front objective lens system and said front-pointing camera sensor, and

(b) said side objective lens system and said side-pointing camera sensor,

wherein changing said distance includes moving said lens barrel within said lens holder, to change a focal distance of at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said optical system further comprises an injector configured to inject cleaning fluid, wherein said injector has a nozzle and a groove, wherein said groove is configured to direct the cleaning fluid from said nozzle in a desired direction, and wherein said injector is at least partially recessed in said groove.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of said front objective lens system and said side objective lens system has a length of 5 mm or less.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said first sub-system further comprises:

a negative lens:

a positive lens positioned on an image side of the negative lens; and

an additional front meniscus lens disposed between said first front negative lens and said second front positive lens.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said second sub-system further comprises:

a first positive lens;

an achromatic sub-assembly comprising:

a second positive lens, and

a negative lens, wherein the achromatic sub-assembly is positioned on an image side of the first positive lens; and

wherein said at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems further comprises a protective cover, said protective cover comprising a pane of protective glass situated between said negative lens and said camera sensor, for said at least one of said front and said side objective lens systems.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the condition of f( first positive lens) ≤1.8f is satisfied, where f is a composite focal length of said at least one of said front and side objects lens systems, and f (first positive lens) is the focal length of said first positive lens.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the condition of f (first positive lens) =1.8f is satisfied, where f is the composite focal length of said at least one of said front and side objects lens systems, and f (first positive lens) is the focal length of said first positive lens.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said front-pointing camera sensor and said front objective lens system are adapted to provide a spatial resolution of at least 60 lines per at an object distance of between 5 and 50 mm.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein said front-pointing camera sensor and said front objective lens system are adapted to provide an angular resolution of 2′ per degree or less at an object distance of between 5 and 50 mm.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said front-pointing camera sensor and said front objective lens system are adapted to provide a Field of View (FOV) of 150 degrees or more.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said front-pointing camera sensor and said front objective lens system are adapted to provide a Field of View (FOV) of 170 degrees or more.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said side-pointing camera sensor and said side objective lens system are adapted to image objects at an object distance of between 3.5 and 50 mm.
