Abstract

In one aspect, a shipping container includes a plurality of thermally insulating pads positioned in a cavity in a box. Each pad of the plurality of thermally insulating pads includes a solid compostable panel formed primarily of extruded milled sorghum, the panel providing a rectangular plate, and a compostable water-proof film forming a pocket enclosing the panel. The panel is loose within the pocket. At least one of the plurality of thermally insulating pads includes a multi-section panel including a score across its width in at least one location. The score extends partially but not entirely through the thickness of the multi-section panel. The multi-section panel is folded at a right angle at the score such that the panel provides a plurality of rectangular plates dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the plurality of plates is adjacent.

Claims (27)

1. A shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

an exterior box having a floor and a plurality of side walls to define a cavity therein and an opening to the cavity at a top of the box;

a cover to close off the top of the box;

a plurality of thermally insulating pads positioned in the cavity, the plurality of thermally insulating pads positioned such that each of the floor, plurality of side walls and cover are adjacent to and covered by a pad from the plurality of thermally insulating pads, the plurality of thermally insulating pads shaped to provide an interior space to receive the item, wherein each pad of the plurality of thermally insulating pads includes

a solid compostable panel formed primarily of extruded milled sorghum, the panel providing a rectangular plate dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular plate is adjacent, and

a compostable water-proof film forming a pocket enclosing the panel, wherein the panel is loose within the pocket,

wherein at least one of the plurality of thermally insulating pads includes a multi-section panel including a score across its width in at least one location, the score extending partially but not entirely through the thickness of the multi-section panel, the multi-section panel folded at a right angle at the score such that the panel provides a plurality of rectangular plates dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the plurality of plates is adjacent.

2. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the panel of each pad has a uniform homogenous composition.

3. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the panel of each pad is a unitary body.

4. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the panel of each pad has a thickness between of about ¼ and 1 inch.

5. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the panel of each pad has a density of about 0.6 to 3.5 g/cm 3 .

6. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein surfaces of the panel of each pad are basically flat.

7. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein one or more surfaces of the panel of each pad are corrugated.

8. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the exterior box is a cardboard box.

9. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the cover comprises one or more flaps extending from one or more side walls of the container.

10. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein one or more apertures are formed through the water-proof film on a side of the pad closer to the exterior box.

11. The shipping container of claim 10 , wherein the compostable water-proof film completely covers the panel on the side of the pad farther from the exterior box.

12. The shipping container of claim 10 , wherein the one or more apertures are about ⅛ to 5 inches across.

13. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein the score forms a recess extending through about 50-75% of a thickness of the multi-section panel.

14. The shipping container of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of thermally insulating pads includes a plurality of stacked panels.

15. A method of fabricating a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

fabricating a plurality of thermally insulating pads, each pad fabricated by

placing a solid compostable panel formed primarily of milled sorghum between two sheets of compostable water-proof film, and

heat sealing the two sheets such that the panel is enclosed in a pocket of water-proof film that completely surrounds the panel with the panel loose in the pocket;

scoring at least one of the plurality of thermally insulating panels across its width to provide a multi-section panel;

folding the multi-section panel at a right angle at the score such that the panel provides a plurality of rectangular plates;

inserting the plurality of thermally insulating pads into a cavity of an exterior box such that each of a floor, plurality of side walls and cover of the box is adjacent to and covered by a pad from the plurality of thermally insulating pads and the plurality of thermally insulating pads provide an interior space to receive the item, and wherein each rectangular plate is dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular plate is adjacent.
