Abstract

Implementations of the present disclosure relate to apparatuses, systems, and methods for anastomosing vascular systems in medical procedures. A pair of similar or identical coupling devices may be disposed at the ends of two vessels, either natural or synthetic. The coupling devices may be capable of hermaphroditically connecting to one another to provide a simple and secure connection which promotes growth of the vessels between the bio-absorbable coupling devices.

Claims (44)

1. A coupling device for providing a coupling site on a body lumen, the coupling device comprising:

a back ring configured to slide around the body lumen, the back ring having a rear proximal portion and a forward distal portion; and

wherein the engaging coupler further comprises a plurality of proximal engaging arms extending proximally from the body of the engaging coupler, and wherein the proximal engaging arms extend proximally beyond the back ring to engage with a rear face of the back ring to limit proximal motion of the back ring when the engaging coupler is engaged with the back ring, and

wherein the engaging coupler is configured to enable hermaphroditic attachment of the coupling device to an identical coupling device.

2. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the back ring includes a circular groove on a rear face of the back ring.

3. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the engaging coupler further comprises a plurality of cuts disposed on an outer surface of the engaging coupler and spaced between the distal engaging arms.

4. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of distal engaging arms are disposed around a circumference of the engaging coupler at equal angular displacements.

5. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the distal engaging arms are disposed 180° from one another.

6. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the distal engaging arms further comprise a hook.

7. The coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the coupling device further comprises a bio-compatible material.

8. A vascular coupling system for coupling a first vessel to a second vessel, the system comprising:

a first coupling device and a second coupling device, the first and second coupling devices each comprising:

a back ring configured to slide fit circumferentially around a respective vessel, the back ring having a proximal end and a distal end, with a rear face located on the proximal end; and

an engaging coupler including a plurality of engaging arms, the engaging arms extending distally from a body of the engaging coupler and having a length greater than a length of the back ring,

wherein, for each of the first and second coupling devices, the engaging coupler has an inner diameter greater than an outer diameter of a portion of the back ring, such that the portion of the back ring may slide within the inner diameter of the engaging coupler,

wherein the first and second coupling devices are configured such that when hermaphroditically coupled together, the engaging arms of the first coupling device extend beyond the back ring of the second coupling device to engage with the rear face of the back ring of the second coupling device and the engaging arms of the second coupling device extend beyond the back ring of the first coupling device to engage with the rear face of the back ring of the first coupling device,

wherein the engaging arms of the first and second coupling devices are disposed at equal angular displacements,

wherein the engaging couplers of the first and second coupling devices further comprise a plurality of cuts with radial depth disposed in an outer surface of the engaging coupler configured to accommodate the engaging arms of the opposite coupling device when the first and second coupling devices are attached, and

wherein the plurality of cuts are angled so as to urge the engaging arms of the opposite coupling device radially outward around the outer surface of the engaging coupler when the first and second coupling devices are attached.

9. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the back ring of the second coupling device includes a circular groove in the rear face, and wherein the engaging arms of the first coupling device further comprise a hook configured to engage with the circular groove in the rear face of the back ring of the second coupling device.

10. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second coupling devices are identical.

11. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the engaging coupler of the first coupling device further comprises a proximally extending engaging arm.

12. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the back ring of the first coupling device includes a circular groove on the rear face of the back ring.

13. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of engaging arms of the first coupling device are disposed around a circumference of the engaging coupler at equal angular displacements.

14. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the engaging arms of the first coupling device further comprise a hook with an undercut groove.

15. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the engaging arms of the first coupling device are disposed about 180° from one another.

16. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the first coupling device further comprises a bio-absorbable material.

17. The vascular coupling system of claim 8 , wherein the engaging coupler of the first coupling device has an elliptical outer surface.

18. The vascular coupling system of claim 17 , wherein the elliptical outer surface includes a major axis and a minor axis, the engaging arms being disposed at the major axis and the cuts being disposed at the minor axis.

19. A method for coupling a first vessel to a second vessel, the method comprising:

providing the vascular coupling system of claim 8 ;

positioning the back ring of the first coupling device circumferentially around an end of the first vessel;

everting the end of the first vessel over an outer diameter of the back ring of the first coupling device;

assembling the first coupling device by sliding an inner surface of the engaging coupler of the first coupling device over the end of the first vessel and an outer surface of the back ring of the first coupling device, creating a friction fit of the engaging coupler of the first coupling device and the back ring of the first coupling device with the end of the first vessel disposed therebetween that is substantially watertight; and
