Abstract

A prosthetic device that may be utilized as an artificial meniscus is disclosed. The prosthetic device can restore shock absorption, stability, and function to the knee after the damaged natural meniscus is removed and replaced with the prosthetic device. In some embodiments, the meniscus includes an integral fixation anchor and additional features that minimize the requirement for modification of the implant for proper fit during surgery.

Claims (14)

1. A prosthetic device for replacing a natural meniscus, the prosthetic device comprising:

a central body portion comprising a flexible polymeric material, the central body portion having an upper articulating bearing surface for movingly engaging a femoral condyle and a lower articulating bearing surface for movingly engaging a tibial plateau;

a perimeter completely surrounding the central body portion and having an increased thickness with respect to the central body portion, wherein the perimeter is configured to limit movement of the femoral condyle with respect to the upper articulating bearing surface of the central body portion, the perimeter having an increased stiffness with respect to the central body portion, wherein the perimeter comprises a filament extending therethrough and providing the increased stiffness of the perimeter, wherein the filament is positioned superiorly relative to the upper articulating bearing surface;

wherein the central body portion and the perimeter comprise a monolithic structure.

2. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic device is configured for implantation without removing any portion of the tibial plateau.

3. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein the perimeter comprises a first portion and a second portion.

4. The prosthetic device of claim 3 , wherein the first and the second portions of the perimeter together completely surround the central body portion.

5. The prosthetic device of claim 3 , wherein the first portion and the second portion each have an increased thickness relative to the central body portion.

6. The prosthetic device of claim 5 , wherein the first portion has a first thickness and the second portion has a second thickness different than the first thickness.

7. The prosthetic device of claim 3 , wherein the second portion extends between first and second ends of the first portion.

8. The prosthetic device of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first portion or the second portion of the perimeter at least partially surrounds central body portion in a semi-ellipsoidal manner.

9. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein the filament is positioned within a recess in the perimeter.

10. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic device is configured for implantation without being rigidly affixed to the femur or the tibia.

11. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein the filament is positioned superiorly relative to a central portion of the upper articulating bearing surface.
