Abstract

An external endoscope light source system includes light emitting diodes for providing a light output to an endoscope. The light is provided to a fiber optic cable for transmission to the endoscope.

Claims (31)

1. A light source comprising:

a first LED for emitting light having a wavelength in a first wavelength range;

a first collecting optic for receiving light from the first LED and transmitting light along a first light pathway;

a first optic member for reflecting light from the first light pathway;

a second LED for emitting light having a wavelength in a second wavelength range;

a second collecting optic for receiving light from the second LED and transmitting light along a second light pathway;

a second optic member for reflecting light from the second light pathway, the second optic member receiving and transmitting light in the first wavelength range, thereby combining light having a wavelength in the first wavelength range transmitted therethrough and light having a wavelength in the second wavelength range reflected thereby, creating a first combined light;

a third LED for emitting light in a third wavelength range;

a third collecting optic for receiving light from the third LED and transmitting light along a third light pathway;

a third optic member for reflecting light from the third light pathway, the third optic member receiving the first combined light and transmitting light having a wavelength in the first wavelength range and transmitting light having a wavelength in the second wavelength range, thereby combining light having a wavelength in the first wavelength range transmitted therethrough, light having a wavelength in the second wavelength range transmitted therethrough, and light having a wavelength in the third wavelength range reflected thereby, creating a second combined light;

a focusing optic for receiving and condensing the second combined light to create a condensed light; and

a collimating optic for receiving the condensed light and orienting the condensed light in a straight path direction.

2. The light source of claim 1 , wherein the first LED, the second LED, and the third LED are aligned sequentially.

3. The light source of claim 2 , and further comprising a light output port for transmitting the light output out of the light source.

4. The light source of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first LED, the second LED, and the third LED emits light in the red visible wavelength range.

5. The light source of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the first LED, the second LED, and the third LED emits light in the green visible wavelength range.

6. The light source of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the first LED, the second LED, and the third LED emits light in the blue visible wavelength range.

7. The light source of claim 1 , wherein the first optic member is a reflector or mirror.

8. The light source of claim 7 , wherein the second optic member and the third optic member are both dichroic filters.

9. The light source of claim 1 , wherein the first optic member, the second optic member, and the third optic member each reflect light substantially 90°.

10. A light source comprising:

a first LED which emits only red visible light;

a second LED which emits only green visible light;

a third LED which emits only blue visible light;

a reflecting optic for reflecting red visible light emitted by the first LED;

a first dichroic filter receiving and transmitting red visible light and reflecting green visible light, thereby combining the red visible light emitted by the first LED and the green visible light emitted by the second LED;

a second dichroic filter receiving and transmitting red visible light and green visible light, and reflecting blue visible light, thereby combining the red visible light emitted by the first LED, the green visible light emitted by the second LED, and the blue visible light emitted by the third LED;

a focusing optic for receiving light from the second dichroic filter and focusing the light to create a focused light; and

a collimating optic for receiving the focused light and collimating the focused light to be a straight light output,

wherein the first LED, the second LED, and the third LED are aligned sequentially, the first LED being positioned farthest from the focusing optic and the third LED positioned nearest the focusing optic.

11. The light source according to claim 10 , wherein the reflecting optic, the first dichroic filter, and the second dichroic filter each reflect light substantially 90°.
