Chlorhexidine gluconate containing solvent adhesive
View Patent ↗Methods for incorporating chlorhexidine salts into solvent based adhesives are described. The methods involve freeze drying an aqueous solution of the chlorhexidine salt and obtaining the chlorhexidine salt in a particulate form. The dry powder can then be dissolved into an appropriate solvent used with the adhesive of interest. Also described are particles including chlorhexidine salts that are incorporated in adhesives. Also described are various medical products utilizing the adhesive and chlorhexidine compound, and related methods of use.
1. An adhesive formulation including chlorhexidine, the adhesive comprising:
an adhesive;
at least one chlorhexidine salt; and
an absorbent;
wherein at least one chlorhexidine salt is soluble in the adhesive.
2. The formulation of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is selected from the group consisting of acrylic adhesives, rubber adhesives, silicone adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, and combinations thereof.
3. The formulation of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is an acrylic adhesive.
4. The formulation of claim 1 wherein the at least one chlorhexidine salt includes chlorhexidine gluconate or chlorhexidine digluconate.
5. The formulation of claim 1 wherein the chlorhexidine salt is in a powder form and is produced by an active drying operation.
6. The formulation of claim 5 wherein the active drying operation is freeze drying.
7. The formulation of claim 5 wherein the active drying operation is spray drying.
8. A medical product having an adhesive according to claim 1 .
9. The medical product of claim 8 wherein the adhesive is selected from the group consisting of acrylic adhesives, rubber adhesives, silicone adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, and combinations thereof.
10. The medical product of claim 8 wherein the adhesive is an acrylic adhesive.
11. The medical product of claim 8 wherein the at least one chlorhexidine salt includes chlorhexidine gluconate or chlorhexidine digluconate.
12. The medical product of claim 8 wherein the chlorhexidine salt is in a powder form and is produced by an active drying operation.
13. The medical product of claim 12 wherein the active drying operation is freeze drying.
14. The medical product of claim 12 wherein the active drying operation is spray drying.
15. The adhesive composition of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent is a hydrocolloid agent.
16. The adhesive composition of claim 15 , wherein the hydrocolloid is a synthetic hydrocolloid.
17. The adhesive composition of claim 16 , wherein the synthetic hydrocolloid is carboxymethyl cellulose.
18. The adhesive composition of claim 17 , wherein the carboxymethyl cellulose has a particle size less than 75 μm.
19. The adhesive composition of claim 18 , wherein the concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose is from about 20% to about 40% (w/w).
20. The adhesive composition of claim 19 , wherein the concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose is from about 30% to about 40% (w/w).
