Abstract

Mesoporous activated carbon is disclosed. In at least some embodiments, virgin activated carbon to be processed may be coconut shell-based. The enhanced activated carbon may have a mesopore structure of at least about 10%. The enhanced activated carbon may be produced through a calcium-catalyzed activation process. A chelator may also be used. Catalyzed thermal activation may be carried out until a desired mass loss is achieved.

Claims (25)

1. A method of facilitating water treatment, comprising:

producing a coconut-shell based activated carbon from a starting material having a mesopore volume in a range of less than about 10% by treating the starting material to increase its mesopore volume to a range of from about 10% to about 30% while substantially maintaining its micropore structure;

providing a vessel containing the coconut shell-based activated carbon having the mesopore volume in the range of from about 10% to about 30%; and

fluidly connecting a source of water to the vessel for treatment via contact with the activated carbon;

the water treatment comprising removing at least one contaminant selected from the group consisting of pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and endocrine disruptors.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activated carbon has an iodine number of about 1100 mg/g.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activated carbon has a hardness of about 95% and an abrasion rating of about 85%.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activated carbon has an apparent density in a range of from about 0.43 g/cc to about 0.49 g/cc.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising reactivating spent activated carbon.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activated carbon is granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered activated carbon (PAC).

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the activated carbon is provided in a fixed bed, expanded bed, moving bed, or fluidized bed.

8. A method of facilitating water treatment, comprising:

producing an activated carbon from a starting material having a mesopore volume in a range of less than about 10% by treating the starting material to increase its mesopore volume to a range of from about 10% to about 30% while substantially maintaining its micropore structure;

providing a vessel containing the activated carbon having a modified pore structure characterized by the mesopore volume being in a range of from about 10% to about 30% and a balance of the pore structure being substantially microporous; and

fluidly connecting a source of water to the vessel for treatment via contact with the activated carbon.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the activated carbon was obtained from a single source.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising reactivating spent activated carbon.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the source of water comprises at least 3.0 mg/L of total organic carbon (TOC) and the activated carbon is provided as a bed of granular activated carbon (GAC),

the method further comprising introducing the source of water at a flow rate of at least about 1 5 million gallons per day (mgd) and continuously operating the vessel without regeneration of the activated carbon for at least about 53 days to continuously produce an effluent containing less than 14 ng/L of TOC.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the source of water comprises at least 300 ng/L of halogenated pesticide compounds and the activated carbon is provided as a bed of granular activated carbon (GAC),

the method further comprising introducing the source of water such that an empty bed contact time of the source water with the activated carbon is about 5 minutes and continuously operating the vessel over a throughput bed volume of at least about 59,000 bed volumes without regeneration of the activated carbon to continuously produce an effluent containing less than 150ng/L of halogenated pesticide compounds.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the water treatment comprises removing at least one contaminant selected from the group consisting of trihalomethanes, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and endocrine disruptors.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the activated carbon is coconut shell-based activated carbon.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the activated carbon has a hardness of about 95%.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the activated carbon has an abrasion rating of about 85%.
