Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner wherein the suction motor axis of rotation is generally parallel to the central longitudinal axis and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, the suction motor axis of rotation is positioned above the central longitudinal axis.

Claims (24)

1. A hand vacuum cleaner having a handle, an upper end, and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a suction motor axis of rotation;

(b) an air treatment member having a front end, a rear end, and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends; and

(c) an air inlet conduit having an inlet conduit axis,

wherein the suction motor axis of rotation is generally parallel to the central longitudinal axis and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor axis of rotation is positioned above the air treatment member, and

wherein when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis, the handle has a lower portion and an upper portion and the lower portion of the handle is positioned at an elevation of a pre-motor filter and the upper portion of the handle is positioned at an elevation of the suction motor.

2. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein a projection of the inlet conduit axis intersects the suction motor.

3. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the inlet conduit axis is generally parallel to the central longitudinal axis.

4. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 3 wherein a projection of the inlet conduit axis intersects the suction motor.

5. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor axis of rotation is positioned above the cyclone.

6. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the inlet conduit axis is above the air treatment member when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis.

7. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the suction motor is positioned above at least a portion of the air treatment member when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis.

8. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the suction motor overlies at least a portion of the air treatment member when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis.

9. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a handle having a hand grip portion that extends upwardly and forwardly when the central longitudinal axis is oriented horizontally.

10. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 9 wherein the handle is positioned rearward of the suction motor.

11. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 9 wherein the handle houses at least one energy storage member in a lower portion thereof.

12. A hand vacuum cleaner having a handle, an upper end, and a lower end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) a suction motor and fan assembly having a suction motor axis of rotation;

(b) a cyclonic cleaning stage comprising a single cyclone, the single cyclone having a front end, a rear end, and a central longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear ends, and

(c) an air inlet conduit having an inlet conduit axis,

wherein the suction motor axis of rotation is generally parallel to the central longitudinal axis and when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor axis of rotation is positioned above the single cyclone.

13. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the inlet conduit axis extends from a dirty air inlet to the cyclonic cleaning stage and a projection of the inlet conduit axis intersects the suction motor.

14. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the inlet conduit axis is above the cyclonic cleaning stage when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit axis positioned above the central longitudinal axis.

15. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the handle has a hand grip portion that is positioned rearward of the suction motor.
