Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods treat cosmetic defects, and often apply cooling with at least one tissue-penetrating probe inserted through of the skin of a patient. The cooling may remodel one or more target tissue so as to effect a desired change in a composition of the target tissue and/or a change in its behavior. Exemplary embodiments of the cooling treatments will interfere with the nerve/muscle contractile function chain so as to mitigate wrinkles of the skin. Related treatments may be used therapeutically for treatment of back and other muscle spasms, chronic pain, and the like. Some embodiments may remodel subcutaneous adipose tissue so as to alter a shape or appearance of the skin surface.

Claims (29)

1. A method for cryogenically treating target tissue for alleviating spasticity of a skeletal muscle having an associated nerve, the method comprising:

providing a cryogenic device having a tissue penetrating needle probe;

inserting a distal portion of the tissue penetrating needle probe through a skin surface so that the distal portion is positioned near the target tissue including the associated nerve;

directing cooling from the tissue penetrating needle probe to the target tissue and cooling the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface with the distal portion of the tissue penetrating needle probe such that the spasticity of the skeletal muscle is reduced.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the associated nerve comprises a motor nerve.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein directing the cooling comprises introducing a cooling fluid into a needle probe lumen so that the cooling fluid vaporizes within the needle probe lumen to provide the cooling to the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the cooling fluid comprises nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inhibiting cooling-induced injury to the skin surface so as to selectively cool the target tissue.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the cooling-induced injury to the skin surface is inhibited by applying warming energy along the skin surface.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the skin surface has a temperature in a range from about 37 degrees Celsius to about 45 degrees Celsius during treatment.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising providing a heating element coupled with a proximal portion of the tissue penetrating needle probe.

9. A method for cryogenically treating target tissue for alleviating spasticity of a skeletal muscle having an associated nerve, the method comprising:

providing a cryogenic device having a tissue penetrating needle probe, wherein the tissue penetrating needle probe comprises a plurality of spaced apart needles;

inserting a distal portion of at least one needle of the plurality of spaced apart needles through a skin surface so that the distal portion is positioned near the target tissue including the associated nerve;

directing cooling from the at least one needle of the plurality of spaced apart needles to the target tissue and cooling the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface with the distal portion of the at least one needle of the plurality of spaced apart needles such that the spasticity of the skeletal muscle is reduced.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of spaced apart needles has a distal portion, a proximal portion, a length less than 5 cm and a diameter in a range from about 0.006 inches to about 0.1 inches.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein adjacent needles of the plurality of spaced apart needles are spaced apart in a range from about 0.25 mm to about 2 mm.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the associated nerve comprises a motor nerve.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein directing the cooling comprises introducing a cooling fluid into a plurality of needle probe lumens of the plurality of spaced apart needles so that the cooling fluid vaporizes within the plurality of needle probe lumens to provide the cooling to the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising inhibiting cooling-induced injury to the skin surface so as to selectively cool the target tissue.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the cooling-induced injury to the skin surface is inhibited by applying warming energy along the skin surface.

16. A method for cryogenically treating target tissue for alleviating spasticity of a skeletal muscle having an associated nerve, the method comprising:

providing a cryogenic device having a tissue penetrating needle probe;

inserting a distal portion of the tissue penetrating needle probe through a skin surface so that the distal portion is positioned near the target tissue including the associated nerve;

directing cooling from the tissue penetrating needle probe to the target tissue and cooling the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface with the distal portion of the tissue penetrating needle probe such that the spasticity of the skeletal muscle is reduced, wherein directing the cooling comprises introducing a cooling fluid into a needle probe lumen so that the cooling fluid vaporizes within the needle probe lumen to provide the cooling to the target tissue including the associated nerve below the skin surface, and wherein directing the cooling further comprises actuating a valve to cause the tissue penetrating needle probe to be in fluid communication with a cartridge pressurized with the cooling fluid.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the associated nerve comprises a motor nerve.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the cooling fluid comprises nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising inhibiting cooling-induced injury to the skin surface so as to selectively cool the target tissue.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the cooling-induced injury to the skin surface is inhibited by applying warming energy along the skin surface.
