Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes launching, by a client system of a first user, a video-call session; receiving, by the client system of the first user, a video stream including video captured at a client system of a second user; and displaying the video stream in a small-overlay-window on a display of the client system of the first user, wherein the small-overlay-window is positioned over an active application.

Claims (54)

1. A method comprising:

launching, by a client system of a first user, a video-call session to enable a video stream for display in a small-overlay-window on a display of the client system of the first user;

receiving, by the client system of the first user, a video stream comprising video captured at a client system of a second user;

accessing a social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, each of the edges between two of the nodes representing a single degree of separation between them, the nodes comprising:

a first node corresponding to the first user;

a second node corresponding to the second user; and

a plurality of other nodes that each correspond to concepts or users associated with a social-networking system;

determining at least one property for the small-overlay-window based on social-graph information associated with the first node and the second node; and

displaying, in a single user interface, the video stream in the small-overlay-window, wherein the small-overlay-window is customized based on the determined at least one property, and wherein the small-overlay-window is positioned directly over an interface of an active application running on the client system of the first user.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing an input received from the first user to a computer server machine associated with the active application while the video stream is still being displayed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an operating system of the client system of the first user supports having two or more applications actively running in the foreground simultaneously.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video stream is received from a server computing machine associated with an application installed on the client system of the first user.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving an input from the first user requesting that the video captured at the client system of the second user be displayed in the small-overlay-window.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video stream comprises a cropped version of the video captured at the client system of the second user.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the cropped version comprises images from the video captured at the client system of the second user cropped using an object-tracking feature, the object-tracking feature cropping the images to fit within a threshold distance of a focal point.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, by the client system of the first user:

receiving an input from the first user for a larger display of the video captured at the client system of the second user; and

displaying a higher-resolution version of the video captured at the client system of the second user within a display region of the client system of the first user, the display region being a region on the display that is larger than the small-overlay-window.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, by the client system of the first user:

receiving an input from the first user for a smaller display of the video captured at the client system of the second user; and

displaying, in a small-overlay-window, a lower-resolution version of the video captured at the client system of the second user.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

capturing video at the client system of the first user; and

sending a lower-resolution version of the video captured at the client system of the first user to the client system of the second user.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the small-overlay-window is initially displayed in a default position and is of a default size, the default position and the default size being based on a user interface of the active application.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the small-overlay-window is initially displayed in a default position and is of a default size, the default position and the default size being based on a history of usage of other small-overlay-windows by the first user.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a position of the small-overlay-window may vary automatically, the position of the small-overlay-window varying so as to not obscure one or more focal-regions of a user interface of the active application, the one or more focal-regions comprising a region in which user input was recently received.

The method of claim 1 , wherein a position of the small-overlay-window may vary automatically, the position of the small-overlay-window varying so as to not obscure one or more focal-regions of a user interface of the active application, the one or more focal-regions being identified based on element types in the user interface.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the small-overlay-window is initially of a default size, the default size being based on the size of the display.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a particular gesture-input from the first user; and

in response to the particular gesture-input, causing the small-overlay-window to reposition to a different location on the display.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a particular gesture-input from the first user; and

in response to the particular gesture-input, re-sizing the small-overlay-window.

18. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software that is operable when executed to:

launch, by a client system of a first user, a video-call session to enable a video stream for display in a small-overlay-window on a display of the client system of the first user;

receive, by the client system of the first user, a video stream comprising video captured at a client system of a second user;

access a social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, each of the edges between two of the nodes representing a single degree of separation between them, the nodes comprising:

a first node corresponding to the first user;

a second node corresponding to the second user; and

a plurality of other nodes that each correspond to concepts or users associated with a social-networking system;

determine at least one property for the small-overlay-window based on social-graph information associated with the first node and the second node; and

display, in a single user interface, the video stream in the small-overlay-window, wherein the small-overlay-window is customized based on the determined at least one property, and wherein the small-overlay-window is positioned directly over an interface of an active application running on the client system of the first user.

19. A system comprising: one or more processors; and a memory coupled to the processors comprising instructions executable by the processors, the processors being operable when executing the instructions to:

launch, by a client system of a first user, a video-call session to enable a video stream for display in a small-overlay-window on a display of the client system of the first user;

receive, by the client system of the first user, a video stream comprising video captured at a client system of a second user;

access a social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, each of the edges between two of the nodes representing a single degree of separation between them, the nodes comprising:

a first node corresponding to the first user;

a second node corresponding to the second user; and

a plurality of other nodes that each correspond to concepts or users associated with a social-networking system;

determine at least one property for the small-overlay-window based on social-graph information associated with the first node and the second node; and

display, in a single user interface, the video stream in the small-overlay-window, wherein the small-overlay-window is customized based on the determined at least one property, and wherein the small-overlay-window is positioned directly over an interface of an active application running on the client system of the first user.

20. The media of claim 18 , wherein the small-overlay-window is initially displayed in a default position and is of a default size, the default position and the default size being based on a history of usage of other small-overlay-windows by the first user.
