Abstract

Techniques and apparatus are provided for downhole sensing using optical couplers in a downhole splitter assembly to split interrogating light signals into multiple optical sensing branches. Each optical branch may then be coupled to an optical sensor (e.g., a pass-through or an optical single-ended transducer (OSET)) or to another optical coupler for additional branching. The sensors may be pressure/temperature (P/T) type transducers. Some systems may exclusively use OSETs as the optical sensors. In this manner, if one of the OSETs is damaged, it does not affect light traveling to any of the other sensors, and sensing information from remaining sensors is still returned.

Claims (25)

1. A cable for use in a downhole sensing system, comprising:

an optical coupler comprising an optical coupler housing, wherein the optical coupler housing is disposed inside the cable; and

a plurality of optical waveguides coupled to the optical coupler.

2. The cable of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of optical waveguides comprises first, second, and third optical waveguides; and

the optical coupler is configured to split a first optical signal in the first optical waveguide into a second optical signal in the second optical waveguide and a third optical signal in the third optical waveguide.

3. The cable of claim 1 , further comprising a splice tube area, wherein the optical coupler is disposed in the splice tube area.

4. The cable of claim 1 , further comprising another optical coupler disposed in the cable and coupled to at least one of the plurality of optical waveguides.

5. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the optical coupler is configured to withstand at least one of high temperature or high pressure, wherein the high temperature is at least 150° C., and wherein the high pressure is at least 10000 psi.

6. A sensing system comprising:

at least one sensor located in a wellbore; and

a cable coupled to the sensor and comprising:

an optical coupler comprising an optical coupler housing, wherein the optical coupler housing is disposed inside the cable; and

a plurality of optical waveguides coupled to the optical coupler.

7. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure fluid flow.

8. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein:

the plurality of optical waveguides comprises first, second, and third optical waveguides; and

the optical coupler is configured to split a first optical signal in the first optical waveguide into a second optical signal in the second optical waveguide and a third optical signal in the third optical waveguide.

9. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the plurality of optical waveguides is coupled to the at least one sensor.

10. The sensing system of claim 6 , further comprising another optical coupler disposed in the cable, wherein the at least one sensor is coupled to at least one of the optical coupler or the other optical coupler via at least one of the plurality of optical waveguides.

11. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises a single-ended optical sensor to measure a downhole parameter and wherein the single-ended optical sensor is not configured to pass interrogating light signals therethrough.

12. The sensing system of claim 11 , wherein the downhole parameter comprises at least one of pressure, temperature, or fluid flow.

13. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises a pass-through optical sensor to measure a downhole parameter and wherein the pass-through optical sensor is configured to pass interrogating light signals therethrough.

14. The sensing system of claim 13 , wherein the downhole parameter comprises at least one of pressure, temperature, or fluid flow.

15. The sensing system of claim 6 , wherein the optical coupler housing is configured to withstand at least one of high temperature or high pressure.
