Abstract

A hydrogel plug is placed under stress during its curing stage, in one embodiment, by application of an externally applied force. The stress may also be induced during or after the dehydration process. The direction of the externally applied force increases the length, width, depth, or radial extent of the plug. The elastic limit of the plug is exceeded when the external force is applied so that the plug substantially retains its stressed size and shape when the externally applied force is removed. When the stretched or otherwise deformed dehydrated plug is hydrated, it substantially returns to the configuration it had prior to its dehydration and prior to the application of the externally applied force.

Claims (19)

1. A method for making a dehydrated hydrogel material including a hyperechoic marker portion, wherein the dehydrated hydrogel expands in a controlled manner when hydrated, comprising the steps of:

applying an external force to the dehydrated hydrogel material to stretch the dehydrated hydrogel material from a repose configuration to a stretched configuration where the stretching exceeds the elastic limit of the dehydrated hydrogel material so that said dehydrated hydrogel material retains its substantially stretched position when the external force is removed; and

hydrating the dehydrated hydrogel material by inserting it into tissue so that natural moisture in said tissue accomplishes said hydration;

whereby said hydrated hydrogel material substantially returns to its unstretched, in repose configuration; and

whereby the hydrated hydrogel enables ultrasound visibility of the hyperechoic marker portion due to a hypoechoic quality of the hydrated hydrogel.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is imbedded in the hydrogel.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker is on a surface of the hydrogel.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the marker is on the outer surface of the hydrogel.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is comprised of at least one of a metal and a plastic.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is a permanent marker.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is at a center of the hydrogel.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is located at the hydrogel at an off-center position with relation to the hydrogel.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the marker portion is imbedded in the hydrogel.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the marker portion is on a surface of the hydrogel.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is helically shaped.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the marker portion is hollow.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is rod shaped.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion coil shaped.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker portion is shaped as a cylinder.
