Abstract

A low cost, robust, wireless sensor that provides an extended period of operability without maintenance is described. The wireless sensors are configured to communicate with a base unit or repeater. When the sensor unit detects an anomalous ambient condition (e.g., smoke, fire, water, etc.) the sensor communicates with the base unit and provides data regarding the anomalous condition. The sensor unit receives instructions to change operating parameters and/or control external devices.

causing a notification of the emergency condition for the level of carbon monoxide to be communicated to the user device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor unit includes:

a controller coupled to one or more sensors for sensing at least one environmental condition of the building, the one or more sensors including the smoke sensor; and

a transceiver coupled to the controller and operable to communicate with the monitoring station.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the sensor unit operates in one of:

a low-power mode in which the controller operates with the one or more sensors to sense the at least one environmental condition of the building and the transceiver is disabled; or

an alert mode in which the controller operates with the one or more sensors to sense the at least one environmental condition of the building and the transceiver is enabled to communicate with the base unit.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the sensor unit is configured to operate in the alert mode during the existence of the emergency condition, and configured to operate in the low-power mode when the emergency condition does not exist.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a spread-spectrum technique is used for said receiving the message.

7. A system for monitoring and reporting environmental conditions within a building, the system comprising:

a monitoring station configured to:

communicate using wireless communication and power-line communication;

receive a message that includes an emergency condition indicator and an authenticity portion for use in verifying an authenticity of the message, from a sensor unit that generates the message and communicates the message using the wireless communication, the emergency condition indicator indicating the existence of an emergency condition, the sensor unit including a smoke sensor configured to detect an amount of smoke within the building that is above of a threshold value for the amount of smoke, the sensor unit including a location identifier that identifies a location of the sensor unit within the building;

receive the location identifier from the sensor unit when the message is generated by and communicated from the sensor unit, wherein an indication of the location of the sensor unit is associated with the received location identifier;

in response to the emergency condition indicator received from the sensor unit, generate a notification of the emergency condition, the notification including the indication of the location of the sensor unit; and

cause, via the power-line communication, the notification of the emergency condition for the amount of smoke to be communicated, via the Internet, to a user device.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein:

the sensor unit includes a carbon monoxide sensor configured to detect a level of carbon monoxide that is above a threshold value for the level of carbon monoxide; and

the monitoring station is configured to receive the emergency condition indicator for the level of carbon monoxide detected by the carbon monoxide sensor, and cause a notification of the emergency condition for the level of carbon monoxide to be communicated to the user device.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the sensor unit includes:

a controller coupled to one or more sensors for sensing at least one environmental condition of the building, the one or more sensors including the smoke sensor; and

a transceiver coupled to the controller and operable to communicate with the monitoring station.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor unit is configured to operate in one of:

a low-power mode in which the controller operates with the one or more sensors to sense the at least one environmental condition of the building and the transceiver is disabled; or

an alert mode in which the controller operates with the one or more sensors to sense the at least one environmental condition of the building and the transceiver is enabled to communicate with the monitoring station.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sensor unit is configured to operate in the alert mode during the existence of the emergency condition, and configured to operate in the low-power mode when the emergency condition does not exist.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein:

the sensor unit comprises different types of sensors; and

the monitoring station is configured to receive a different emergency condition indicator from the sensor unit based on which sensor of the different types of sensors is activated having detected the emergency condition.
