Abstract

A method, system, or device to display media segment on an electronic device. The method includes receiving a fingerprint for a media segment and a unique identifier (UID) from an electronic device and determining a media segment ID for the media segment using the fingerprint. The method can include generating and submitting a first query for the media segment ID and the UID in a record database and determining that a first count in the record database for the media segment ID and the UID exceed a first threshold count. The method can include identifying an overlay content segment to display and sending the overlay content segment to the electronic device. The method can include receiving a notification from the electronic device indicating that the electronic device displayed the overlay content segment and increment a second count in the record database for a overlay content segment and a UID.

5. The overlay content server device of claim 1 , wherein the processing device is further to send a configuration setting to the television instructing the television to display the media segment when the television does not receive the second notification before the media segment is scheduled to be displayed.

6. The overlay content server device of claim 1 , wherein a zero count for the media segment ID indicates that the television has not previously displayed the media segment.

7. The overlay content server device of claim 1 , wherein the media content is at least a portion of media content of a television show or movie broadcast and the media segment is a commercial within the television show or movie broadcast.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the television is a smart television, the smart television comprising:

the processing device operable to:

access online interactive media or on-demand streaming media using radio frequency (RF) circuitry;

execute an operating system (OS); and

execute one or more applications; and

the RF circuitry comprising an antenna configured to transmit data on the first network connection.

9. A device comprising:

computer-readable storage medium storing instructions;

a processing device to execute the instructions to:

receive a fingerprint for a media segment of a media content and a unique identifier (UID) from an electronic device via a first network connection;

determine a media segment ID for the media segment using the fingerprint;

generate and submit a first query for the media segment ID in a record database via a second network connection;

determine that a first count in the record database for the media segment ID and the UID exceed a first threshold count;

identify a first overlay content segment in a first set of overlay content segments to display on the electronic device;

generate and submit a second query for a first overlay content segment ID and the UID in the record database via the second network connection, wherein the first overlay content segment ID is an overlay content segment ID for the first overlay content segment;

determine that a second count in the record database for the first overlay content segment ID and the UID exceeds a second threshold count;

identify a second overlay content segment in the first set of overlay content segments to display on the electronic device;

generate and submit a third query for a second overlay content segment ID and the UID in the record database via the second network connection, wherein the second overlay content segment ID is an overlay content segment ID for the second overlay content segment;

determine that a third count in the record database for the second overlay content segment ID and the UID does not exceed a third threshold count;

send the second overlay content segment to the electronic device;

receive a notification from the electronic device indicating that the electronic device displayed the second overlay content segment, wherein the notification comprises the second overlay content segment ID and the UID; and

increment the third count in the record database for the second overlay content segment ID and the UID.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first threshold count, the second threshold count, and the third threshold count are set for amounts.

11. The device of claim 10 , the first threshold count, the second threshold count, and the third threshold count are set using threshold criteria for the media segment, the first overlay content segment, and the second overlay content segment.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the threshold criteria comprises demographic information of a viewer, a gender of the viewer, or a time of day.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the processing device is further to execute the instructions to:

generate and submit a fourth query for the second overlay content segment ID and the UID in the record database via the second network connection;

determine that the third count in the record database for the second overlay content segment ID and the UID exceeds the third threshold count; and

iteratively search the record database to identify an n th overlay content segment ID for an n th overlay content segment that does not exceed a fourth threshold count.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the iterative search is a sequential search of entries in the record database that comprise overlay content segments.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the processing device is further to execute the instructions to reset the counts associated with each of the entries in the record database to zero when the respective threshold counts for the media segment and each of the n th overlay content segments has been exceeded.
