Abstract

A downdraft gasifier that utilizes a plurality of vertically positioned tubes to create a pyrolysis zone, an oxidation zone beneath the pyrolysis zone and a reduction zone beneath the oxidation zone. The shape of the tubes eliminates the need for a restriction (hearth), which limits the maximum achievable throughput. A rotating and vertically adjustable grate is located beneath, but not attached to, the reduction zone of the gasifier.

Claims (11)

1. A device comprising:

a vertically oriented downdraft gasifier having a distal end comprising a reduction zone;

a variably rotating and vertically adjustable downdraft gasifier grate mounted on a supporting shaft within the gasifier, the supporting shaft configured to rotate the grate between 0.0001 rotations per minute and 1 rotation per minute; and

an elevating platform positioned below the reduction zone,

wherein said grate and shaft is mounted on the elevating platform,

wherein the elevating platform is configured to move the grate up and down between 0.25 and 2.0 inches,

wherein said grate comprises a plurality of replaceable segments with holes.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the grate further comprises a top face and a bottom face, wherein said top and bottom faces are oriented perpendicular to the vertically oriented downdraft gasifier so as to be devoid of right angles with respect to the vertical orientation of the gasifier, and the top face of the grate comprises a pattern that is a spiral groove that begins at the center of the grate and spans the entire top face of the grate.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the holes of the replaceable segments are distributed symmetrically across the top face of the grate.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the bottom face of the grate is a frame and the top face of the grate comprises the plurality of replaceable segments sitting on the frame.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the downdraft gasifier is configured for gasification of feedstock that produces a by-product of biochar, wherein the grate is located below the reduction zone of the gasifier so as to create and adjust the height of a gap between the grate and the reduction zone whereby a residence time for feedstock and biochar within the gasifier is controlled.
