Abstract

A retainer for assembling tissue thickness compensators to a surgical stapler can comprise a grip, a first surface for supporting a first tissue thickness compensator, a second surface for supporting a second tissue thickness compensator, and clips for aligning and attaching the retainer to the surgical stapler. The clips may align and attach the retainer to a staple cartridge of the surgical instrument. The clips may align the retainer with an anvil of the surgical instrument. An insertion tool may be used in combination with the retainer to insert the retainer into the surgical stapler and to push the tissue thickness compensators against the anvil and/or the staple cartridge of the surgical instrument.

Claims (38)

1. A cartridge assembly system for a surgical stapler, comprising:

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a plurality of staple cavities; and

a plurality of staples positioned within said staple cavities;

a retainer, comprising:

a first retainer plate;

a second retainer plate;

a connector connecting said first retainer plate and said second retainer plate, wherein said first retainer plate is pivotable relative to said second retainer plate about said connector; and

a first cam on one of said first retainer plate and said second retainer plate;

a first biocompatible layer removably attached to said cartridge body and removably attached to the first retainer plate;

a second biocompatible layer removably attached to said second retainer plate, wherein said first biocompatible layer and said second biocompatible layer are configured to be captured within said staples and assume different compressed heights within different said staples; and

a spreader configured to be disposed intermediate said first retainer plate and said second retainer plate and configured to move relative to said retainer between a first position and a second position, said spreader comprising a second cam configured to engage said first cam, and wherein movement of said spreader from said first position to said second position causes relative movement between said first cam and said second cam and causes said first retainer plate and said second retainer plate to pivot away from each other.

2. The cartridge assembly system of claim 1 , wherein said retainer is configured to deliver said staple cartridge into the surgical stapler.

3. The cartridge assembly system of claim 1 , wherein said spreader is configured to rotatably disengage from said retainer.

4. The cartridge assembly system of claim 1 , wherein said first position and said second position are longitudinally offset.

5. An assembly for inserting a staple cartridge assembly comprising a tissue thickness compensator into a surgical stapler, the assembly comprising:

a first plate comprising a first cam;

a second plate;

a hinge joint intermediate said first plate and said second plate; and

a spreader operably disposed intermediate said first plate and said second plate, wherein said spreader is configured to move between a first position and a second position, wherein said spreader comprises a second cam configured to engage said first cam, and wherein movement of said spreader from said first position to said second position causes relative movement between said first cam and said second cam and causes said first plate and said second plate to pivot away from each other at said hinge joint.

6. The assembly of claim 5 , further comprising said tissue thickness compensator releasably attached to one of said first plate and said second plate.

7. The assembly of claim 6 , further comprising a second tissue thickness compensator.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a cartridge body comprising a plurality of staples removably positioned within a plurality of staple cavities.

9. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein one of said first plate and said second plate comprises a clip configured to releasably engage said cartridge body.

10. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein said second tissue thickness compensator is releasably attached to said cartridge body.

11. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein said tissue thickness compensator and said second tissue thickness compensator are configured to be captured within said staples and assume different compressed heights within different said staples.

12. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein said first plate comprises an inwardly-facing surface, and wherein said first cam protrudes from said inwardly-facing surface toward said second plate.

13. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein said first cam comprises a first lobe, a second lobe, and an anti-lobe positioned intermediate said first lobe and said second lobe.

14. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein said spreader is configured to rotatably disengage from said first plate and said second plate.

15. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein said first position and said second position are longitudinally offset.

16. An assembly for inserting a staple cartridge assembly comprising a tissue thickness compensator into a surgical stapler, wherein the assembly comprises:

a retainer, comprising:

a first plate comprising a first proximal end;

a second plate comprising a second proximal end;

a hinge connecting said first proximal end and said second proximal end; and

a cam projecting into a gap defined between said first plate and said second plate; and

camming means for engaging said cam to pivot said first plate and said second plate away from each other at said hinge.

17. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein said camming means is configured to rotatably disengage from said retainer.
