Abstract

An apparatus and method for aspirating, irrigating and/or cleansing wounds is provided. The apparatus and method include one or more of the following: simultaneous aspiration and irrigation of the wound, supplying of thermal energy to fluid circulated through the wound; supplying physiologically active agents to the wound; a biodegradable scaffold in contact with the wound bed; and application of stress or flow stress to the wound bed.

Claims (33)

1. A system for delivering fluid to a wound dressing, the system comprising:

a negative pressure source configured to be coupled to a wound dressing;

a fluid flow device configured to be in fluid communication with the wound dressing, the fluid flow device configured to control flow of fluid to the wound dressing;

a reservoir configured to be coupled to the negative pressure source and configured to be in fluid communication with the wound dressing;

a vent connected to the reservoir;

a valve configured to be positioned between the wound dressing and the reservoir; and

a pressure sensor configured to be positioned coupled to the wound dressing, the pressure sensor configured to send a control signal when the pressure sensor detects a predetermined pressure at the wound dressing,

wherein the negative pressure source is configured to apply negative pressure to a wound by cycling between a first negative pressure level and a second negative pressure level, the vent is configured to bleed the reservoir, the valve is configured to restrict fluid flow to the reservoir, and the fluid flow device is configured to deliver fluid to the wound dressing responsive to the control signal from the pressure sensor, the fluid flow device configured to deliver fluid to the wound in a plurality of fluid supply cycles, each fluid supply cycle supplying a volume of fluid with a time period between fluid supply cycles.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow device is a pump.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the pump is a variable-speed pump.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow device is a peristaltic pump.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow device is a centrifugal pump.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow device is a valve.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow device is a motorized valve.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined pressure is approximately 0.9 atm.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined pressure is a negative pressure of no more than 0.9 atm.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises thermal energy.

11. A system for delivering fluid to a wound dressing, the system comprising:

a negative pressure source configured to aspirate fluid from a wound dressing, the negative pressure source configured to apply negative pressure to a wound by cycling between a first negative pressure level and a second negative pressure level;

a fluid movement device configured to be in fluid communication with the wound dressing, the fluid movement device comprising a control device configured to control flow through the fluid movement device;

a collection vessel configured to be coupled to the negative pressure source and configured to be in fluid communication with the wound dressing;

a vent connected to the collection vessel and configured to bleed fluid from the collection vessel;

a valve configured to be positioned between the wound dressing and the collection vessel, the valve configured to regulate fluid flow from the wound to the collection vessel; and

a pressure sensor configured to be coupled to the wound dressing, the pressure sensor configured to send a control signal when the pressure sensor detects a predetermined pressure under the wound dressing,

wherein the control device is configured to control delivery of fluid by the fluid movement device to the wound dressing responsive to the control signal from the pressure sensor, the control device configured to control delivery of fluid by the fluid movement device such that fluid is supplied to the wound in a plurality of fluid cycles, each fluid cycle supplying a volume of fluid with a time period between fluid supply cycles.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid movement device comprises a pump.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the pump comprises a variable-speed pump.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid movement device comprises a peristaltic pump.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid movement device comprises a centrifugal pump.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid movement device comprises a valve.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid movement device comprises a motorized valve.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined pressure is approximately 0.9 atm.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined pressure is a negative pressure of no more than 0.9 atm.
