Abstract

A dryer adapted for use in an asphalt plant. The dryer comprises a drum having an inner wall and a plurality of flights, each of which is disposed on the inner wall of the drum and each of which has a proximal end and a distal end spaced apart from the proximal end. At least one of the plurality of flights comprises a V-shaped notch. A method for drying components of asphalt comprising drying the components of asphalt in the drum of such a dryer.

Claims (29)

1. A dryer adapted for use in an asphalt plant, said dryer comprising:

(a) a drum, said drum having an inner wall;

(b) a plurality of flights, each of said plurality of flights being disposed on the inner wall of the drum and each of said plurality of flights having a proximal end and a distal end spaced apart from the proximal end;

wherein at least one of the plurality of flights comprises a V-shaped notch cut in the distal end of each of the plurality of flights and extending toward the proximal end of each of the plurality of flights.

2. The dryer of claim 1 wherein the plurality of flights are arranged substantially parallel to each other.

3. The dryer of claim 1 wherein the V-shaped notch is disposed in a central portion of the distal end of the at least one of the plurality of flights.

4. The dryer of claim 1 wherein the V-shaped notch extends from the distal end of the at least one of the plurality of flights toward the proximal end of the at least one of the plurality of flights.

5. The dryer of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of flights comprises a first extending portion which is adjacent to the proximal end.

6. The dryer of claim 5 wherein each of the plurality of flights comprises a second extending portion which is adjacent to the first extending portion.

7. The dryer of claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of flights comprises a third extending portion which is adjacent to the second extending portion.

8. The dryer of claim 7 wherein each of the plurality of flights comprises a fourth extending portion which is adjacent to the third extending portion and extends to the distal end.

9. The dryer of claim 8 wherein the V-shaped notch extends from the distal end of the at least one of the plurality of flights to the first extending portion.

10. The dryer of claim 8 wherein the V-shaped notch extends from the distal end of the at least one of the plurality of flights to the second extending portion.

11. The dryer of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of flights comprises a mounting portion which is disposed adjacent to the inner wall of the drum.

12. The dryer of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of flights is removably attached to the inner wall of the drum.

13. The dryer of claim 1 wherein the drum is adapted to rotate at variable speeds.

14. The dryer of claim 1 further comprising a dryer drum drive, said dryer drum drive being adapted to control the rotational speed of the drum.

15. The dryer of claim 14 further comprising a variable frequency drive, said variable frequency drive being adapted to vary the speed of dryer drum drive.

16. The dryer of claim 15 further comprising a controller, said controller being adapted to control the variable frequency drive.

17. The dryer of claim 1 further comprising a mixing chamber.

18. The dryer of claim 1 further comprising a duct.

19. A method for drying components of asphalt, said method comprising:

(a) providing a dryer adapted for use in an asphalt plant, said dryer comprising:

(1) a drum, said drum having an inner wall;

(2) a plurality of flights, each of said plurality of flights being disposed on the inner wall of the drum and each of said plurality of flights having a proximal end and a distal end spaced apart from the proximal end;

wherein at least one of the plurality of flights comprises a V-shaped notch cut in the distal end of each of the plurality of flights and extending toward the proximal end of each of the plurality of flights;

(b) drying the components of asphalt in the drum of the dryer.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising:

(c) rotating the drum.
