Abstract

A failover system includes a plurality of configuration controllers and a plurality of switches. The switches include a site proxy, a failover module and a routing table. A first site proxy of a first switch is designated as the active proxy and controls failover in the event a switch fails or otherwise becomes unavailable. A second site proxy of a second switch is designated as the backup proxy and controls failover in the event the first switch fails or otherwise becomes unavailable. In the event a switch fails or otherwise becomes available, the active proxy interacts with the configuration controller and reassigns the extensions associated with the failed switch to a different switch of the plurality of switches. If a configuration controller fails or otherwise becomes unavailable, another configuration controller becomes active and establishes communication with the plurality of switches to maintain the operational status of the IP telephony system.

Claims (23)

1. A method for failover in an IP telephony system performed by one or more computing devices, the IP telephony system comprising a plurality of networked switches each assigned to route calls and requests from different extensions, the method comprising:

acquiring a virtual IP address by a first switch, the first switch including a routing table and a site proxy designated as an active proxy, the active proxy being a component that controls failover in the event one or more other switches of the IP telephony system fails, loses network connectivity or otherwise becomes unavailable;

updating the routing table of the first switch with the virtual IP address and priority information associated with the first switch;

distributing information about the virtual IP address and the priority information to one or more other switches of the IP telephony system, the one or more other switches each including a site proxy designated as a backup proxy;

monitoring, by the first switch, the one or more other switches for a failover event associated with at least one of the one or more other switches;

in response to detecting a failover event associated with at least one of the one or more other switches, assigning connections of the at least one of the one or more other switches associated with the failover event to the first switch;

determining a failover event of the active proxy associated with the first switch; and

responsive to determining the failover event of the active proxy associated with the first switch, assigning a site proxy of at least one of the one or more other switches as the active proxy,

wherein at least two of the networked switches each actively route calls and requests from different extensions.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

deleting the virtual IP address information from the routing table in response to the first switch dropping the acquired IP address.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring for the failover event further comprises identifying as a failed switch a switch that has failed, lost network connectivity or otherwise is unavailable.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the failover event involves at least one of a switch becoming reachable, a switch becoming unreachable, an entry in a routing table adding a potential proxy, or an entry in a routing table deleting a potential proxy.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first switch and the one or more other switches are each configured with a respective virtual IP address.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, in the routing table, information about each of the one or more other switches and associated extensions, wherein the information stored in the routing table includes priority value and status as available, unavailable or pending reassignment.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

storing, in the routing table, information about a configuration controller with which the first switch is associated with and to which the first switch sends service requests.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring for the failover event further comprises:

attempting to send a call request to an extension; and

receiving an indication that the call request cannot be made because a switch is unavailable.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

waiting a predetermined amount of time before generating a failure signal after receiving the indication that the call request cannot be made.
