Abstract

An impact biopsy device is disclosed. The impact biopsy device may be configured to displace various cutting elements, such as an outer tubular member and cutting element and a cannula to sever a tissue sample from a patient. The impact biopsy device may comprise an actuation system configured to transfer displacement or force to the cutting elements by the impact of an element on another element.

Claims (63)

1. A tissue biopsy device, comprising:

a handle;

a needle assembly operably coupled to the handle; and

an actuator assembly operably coupled to the handle and needle assembly, the actuator assembly comprising:

a biasing member;

a priming handle comprising a trigger surface;

a retention tube comprising a proximal catch;

a traveling member configured to be displaced when the actuator assembly is actuated, the traveling member comprising a traveling member catch;

an impact member coupled to the needle assembly, the impact member configured to displace at least a portion of the needle assembly when the traveling member impacts the impact member; and

a follower releasably coupled to the impact member,

wherein the needle assembly comprises an outer tubular member and a cannula, and wherein the outer tubular member is fixedly coupled to the impact member and the cannula is releasably coupled to the impact member,

wherein the traveling member catch is configured to engage with the proximal catch of the retention tube when the actuator assembly is in a primed configuration, and

wherein the trigger surface of the priming handle is configured to displace the traveling member catch from the proximal catch when the actuator assembly is actuated.

2. The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the traveling member is displaced over a distance before impacting the impact member.

3. The biopsy device of claim 2 , wherein the biasing member does not directly exert a force on the impact member.

4. The biopsy device of claim 3 , wherein the biasing member does not directly exert a force on the follower.

5. The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the cannula is fixedly coupled to the follower.

6. The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the follower is configured to decouple from the impact member such that the impact member travels a longer distance than the follower when the device is actuated.

7. The biopsy device of claim 1 , further comprising an adjustable stop.

8. The biopsy device of claim 7 , wherein the adjustable stop comprises a cap portion and a threaded portion.

9. The biopsy device of claim 8 , wherein the cap portion comprises a slot.

10. The biopsy device of claim 8 , wherein the cap portion further comprises indicia.

11. A tissue biopsy device, comprising:

a handle;

a needle assembly operably coupled to the handle; and

an actuator assembly operably coupled to the handle and needle assembly, the actuator assembly comprising:

a biasing member;

a priming handle comprising a trigger surface;

a retention tube comprising a proximal catch;

a traveling member configured to be displaced by the biasing member when the actuator assembly is actuated, the traveling member comprising a traveling member catch;

a first member coupled to a first portion of the needle assembly; and

a second member coupled to a second portion of the needle assembly;

wherein the first and second members are configured to be displaced when at least one of the first and second members is impacted by the traveling member,

wherein the second member is releasably coupled to the first member,

wherein the traveling member catch is configured to engage with the proximal catch of the retention tube when the actuator assembly is in a primed configuration, and

wherein the trigger surface of the priming handle is configured to displace the traveling member catch from the proximal catch when the actuator assembly is actuated.

12. The biopsy device of claim 11 , wherein kinetic energy associated with the traveling member is transferred to at least one of the first member and the second member to accelerate the at least one of the first member and the second member when the device is actuated.

13. The biopsy device of claim 11 , wherein the biasing member does not directly exert a force on one of the first member or the second member.

14. The biopsy device of claim 11 , wherein the needle assembly comprises an outer tubular member and a cannula, and wherein the outer tubular member is fixedly coupled to the first member and the cannula is releasably coupled to the first member.

15. The biopsy device of claim 11 , wherein the first member is configured to travel a longer distance than the second member when the device is actuated.

16. A tissue biopsy device comprising:

a handle configured to be graspable by a user;

a biasing member operably coupled to the handle, the biasing member configured to store potential energy when the biopsy device is in a primed configuration;

a priming handle comprising a trigger surface;

a retention tube comprising a proximal catch;

a traveling member operably coupled to the handle, the traveling member disposed such that the potential energy stored in the biasing member is at least partially converted to kinetic energy associated with the traveling member when the biopsy device is actuated, the traveling member comprising a traveling member catch; and

an impact member operably coupled to the handle and to the biasing member, the device configured such that the traveling member impacts the impact member when the biopsy device is actuated such that the impact member is displaced relative to the handle,

wherein a first portion of a needle assembly is configured to be displaced over a first distance and a second portion of the needle assembly is configured to be displaced over a second distance when the biopsy device is actuated,

wherein the first distance is different than the second distance,

wherein the first portion of the needle assembly is fixedly coupled to the impact member,

wherein the second portion of the needle assembly is fixedly coupled to a follower and the follower is releasably coupled to the impact member,

wherein the traveling member catch is configured to engage with the proximal catch of the retention tube when the actuator assembly is in a primed configuration, and

wherein the trigger surface of the priming handle is configured to displace the traveling member catch from the proximal catch when the actuator assembly is actuated.

17. The biopsy device of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the first distance and second distance is adjustable over a continuous range.

18. The biopsy device of claim 16 , wherein the impact member is coupled to the follower when the biopsy device is in a primed configuration and wherein the follower is initially displaced with the impact member when the device is actuated.

19. The biopsy device of claim 16 , wherein the follower decouples from the impact member such that the impact member travels a longer distance than the second distance when the biopsy device is actuated.

20. A method of obtaining a tissue sample through actuation of a biopsy device, the method comprising:

displacing a priming handle;

disengaging a traveling member catch from a retention tube proximal catch;

releasing a traveling member such that the traveling member is displaced a first longitudinal distance along the biopsy device;

impacting the traveling member with an impact member such that the impact member is displaced a second longitudinal distance along the biopsy device;

displacing a first cutting member coupled to the impact member such that the cutting member severs a first portion of the tissue sample; and

displacing a second cutting member releasably coupled to the impact member such that the second cutting member is displaced over a different distance than the first cutting member.
