Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a device, system and method for providing high flow therapy interfaces for use in the treatment of respiratory conditions and in assisted respirations. A nasal cannula for delivery of respiratory gases includes at least one nasal insert and at least one flange coupled to the at least one nasal insert where the at least one flange extends in a radial direction from the at least one nasal insert is provided. In another aspect of the embodiment, the at least one flange is adapted to fit within the nostril of a patient. In another aspect of the embodiment, the at least one flange is a lobulated flange.

Claims (34)

1. A nasal cannula for delivery of respiratory gases, the nasal cannula comprising:

at least one nasal insert having a gas supply outlet with a top surface; and

at least one flange that has a top surface, and coupled to the at least one nasal insert, wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet is positioned distal to the top surface of the at least one flange,

wherein the at least one flange extends more in a radial direction than along a length direction from the at least one nasal insert,

wherein the at least one nasal insert is structured to allow the respiratory gases to be supplied through a lumen and exhaled gases to be substantially exhausted about the at least one flange during use,

wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet and the top surface of the at least one flange are adapted to be located in the nasal cavity during use.

2. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flange is adapted to fit within the nostril of a patient.

3. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one nasal insert has at least two lumens.

4. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one nasal insert includes an upper nasal insert portion and a lower nasal insert portion divided by the at least one flange.

5. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flange does not include an additional lumen to deliver the supplied respiratory gases.

6. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flange and the at least one nasal insert are integral.

7. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flange has at least one slot.

8. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flange is a lobulated flange.

9. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of a top surface of the at least one flange is adapted to not contact the inside walls of the nostril during use.

10. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of a side surface of the at least one flange is adapted to not contact the inside walls of the nostril during use.

11. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the nasal cannula has two nasal inserts.

12. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the least one flange has an implied oval shape.

13. The nasal cannula of claim 1 , wherein the least one flange has an implied circular shape.

14. A nasal cannula for delivery of respiratory gases, the nasal cannula comprising:

at least one nasal insert having a gas supply outlet with a top surface; and

at least one flange that has a top surface, and coupled to the at least one nasal insert, wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet is positioned distal to the top surface of the at least one flange,

wherein the at least one flange extends in a normal direction from the at least one nasal insert,

wherein the at least one nasal insert is structured to allow the respiratory gases to be supplied through a lumen and exhaled gases to be substantially exhausted about the at least one flange during use,

wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet and the top surface of the at least one flange are adapted to be located in the nasal cavity during use.

15. The nasal cannula of claim 14 , wherein the at least one flange is adapted to fit within the nostril of a patient.

16. The nasal cannula of claim 14 , wherein the at least one nasal insert has at least two lumens.

17. A nasal cannula for delivery of respiratory gases, the nasal cannula comprising:

at least one nasal insert having a gas supply outlet with a top surface; and

at least one flange that has a top surface, and coupled to the at least one nasal insert, wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet is positioned distal to the top surface of the at least one flange,

wherein the at least one flange has at least one portion that extends a first distance from the at least one nasal insert, has a thickness that defines a second distance, and the first distance is greater than the second distance,

wherein the at least one nasal insert is structured to allow the respiratory gases to be supplied through a lumen and exhaled gases to be substantially exhausted about the at least one flange during use,

wherein the top surface of the gas supply outlet and the top surface of the at least one flange are adapted to be located in the nasal cavity during use.

18. The nasal cannula of claim 17 , wherein the at least one flange is adapted to fit within the nostril of a patient.

19. The nasal cannula of claim 17 , wherein the at least one nasal insert has at least two lumens.
