Systems, Methods, and Devices for Providing Rotatable Light Modules and Hinged Mount in a Luminaire
Present embodiments provide a light fixture having rotatable light modules and an extendable hinged mounting assembly. The light modules are electrically coupled to the light fixture via a cord and a grommet/bracket feature which provides strain relief and a waterproof barrier. The extendable hinged mounting assembly allows the light fixture to be mounted onto a ceiling or other structure while providing a mounted position and an install position.
1 . A light fixture comprising:
a central housing comprising one or more electrical components;
at least one rotatable light module coupled to the central housing, wherein the at least one rotatable light module comprises:
two longitudinal edges,
a first side flange disposed between an end of the two longitudinal edges and a second side flange disposed opposite the first side flange and in between an opposite end of the two longitudinal edges,
a substantially rectangular shaped top surface disposed between the two longitudinal edges, the first side flange, and the second side flange and a substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface disposed opposite to the substantially rectangular shaped top surface, wherein a circuit board is disposed on the substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface;
a heat sink disposed on the substantially rectangular shaped top surface, wherein the heat sink comprises a first set of heat sink fins and a second set of heat sink fins, wherein the first set of heat sink fins are disposed adjacent the first side flange and the second set of heat sink fins are disposed adjacent the second side flange such that the first set of heat sink fins are separated from the second set of heat sink fins by a space, and
an opening that extends from the substantially rectangular shaped top surface through the substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface and positioned in the space in between the first set of heat sink fins and the second set of heat sink fins;
at least one peripheral cord coupled to the at least one rotatable light module, wherein one end of the at least one peripheral cord traverses the opening of the at least one rotatable light module and an opposite end of the at least one peripheral cord traverses at least one respective peripheral opening in the central housing; and
a first peripheral grommet that is disposed in the space and around the one end of the at least one peripheral cord at a junction of the at least one peripheral cord and the at least one rotatable light module.
2 . The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising:
a second peripheral grommet traversing the at least one peripheral opening on the central housing, wherein the second peripheral grommet surrounds the opposite end of the at least one peripheral cord and forms a water tight seal between the opposite end of the at least one peripheral cord and the central housing.

The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the first peripheral grommet is configured to form a water tight seal between the at least one peripheral cord and the at least one rotatable light module and hold the one end of the at least one peripheral cord stationary with respect to the at least one rotatable light module.
4 . The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein each heat sink fin of the first set of heat sink fins and the second set of heat sink fins extend between the two longitudinal edges.
5 . The light fixture of claim 3 , wherein each of the first side flange and the second side flange comprises one or more features that rotatably couple the at least one rotatable light module to the central housing.
6 . The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising:
a mounting mechanism coupled to the central housing at a first portion and configured to couple to a support structure at a second portion, wherein the first portion and the second portion are coupled by a movable middle portion, wherein the light fixture is movable between a hanging position and a mounted position via the mounting mechanism.
7 . The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the central housing is made of a deep drawn process using cold rolled steel.
8 . The light fixture of claim 1 , further comprising:
a central cord that traverses another opening on the central housing;
a central grommet that is disposed around the central cord at a junction of the central cord and the central housing to form a water tight seal between the central cord and the central housing, wherein the central cord is configured to provide electric power to the one or more electrical components when the central cord is coupled to a power supply.

The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the first side flange and the second side flange are substantially perpendicular to the substantially rectangular shaped top surface and the substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface, and wherein the first side flange and the second side flange extend in a direction opposite to that of the substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface.
10 . A light fixture comprising:
a central housing comprising a top surface and a plurality of side surfaces,
wherein the central housing houses one or more electrical components, and
wherein each side surface of the central housing comprises a peripheral opening that provides a path for the one or more electrical components to be coupled to at least one rotatable light module;
the at least one rotatable light module coupled to the central housing, wherein the at least one rotatable light module comprises a heat sink on a heat sink side of the at least one rotatable light module, wherein the heat sink comprises a first set of heat sink fins and a second set of heat sink fins that are arranged on the heat sink side such that a space is formed between the first set of heat sink fins and the second set of heat sink fins;
at least one peripheral wiring component electrically coupling the at least one rotatable light module to the one or more electrical components disposed within the central housing; and
a grommet disposed on the at least one rotatable light module at a junction where the at least one peripheral wiring component is coupled to the at least one rotatable light module and configured to provide a path for the at least one peripheral wiring component to enter the at least one rotatable light module, wherein the grommet surrounds a portion of the at least one peripheral wiring component,
wherein the grommet is disposed in the space between the two sets of of heat sink fins.
11 . The light fixture of claim 10 , comprising:
a housing grommet traversing a housing opening in the central housing, wherein the housing grommet forms a water tight seal between the central housing and a cable that is configured to supply electrical power to the one or more electrical components.
12 . The light fixture of claim 10 , further comprising:
a peripheral grommet disposed on the respective side surface of the central housing at another junction where the at least one peripheral wiring component is coupled to the central housing and configured to provide a path for the at least one peripheral wiring component to enter the central housing, wherein the peripheral grommet surrounds an opposite portion of the at least one peripheral wiring component.
13 . The light fixture of claim 10 , further comprising a bracket assembly that is disposed around the grommet to hold the portion of the at least one peripheral wiring component stationary with respect to the at least one rotatable light module.
14 . The light fixture of claim 10 , further comprising a circuit board that is disposed on a side of the at least one rotatable light module that is opposite to the heat sink side, and one or more light sources that are disposed on the circuit board.
15 . A light fixture comprising:
a mounting assembly for mounting the light fixture to a mounting surface;
a central housing that is coupled to the mounting assembly, wherein the central housing houses one or more electrical components;
a grommet, wherein the grommet traverses an opening in the central housing, providing a path for a cord to enter the central housing through the grommet, wherein the grommet forms a water tight seal between the cord and the central housing;
at least one rotatable light module coupled to the central housing, the at least one rotatable light module comprising:
a substantially rectangular shaped top surface and a substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface disposed opposite to the substantially rectangular shaped back surface,
a circuit board disposed on the substantially rectangular shaped bottom surface; and
a heat sink disposed on the substantially rectangular shaped top surface,
wherein the heat sink comprises a first set of heat sink fins and a second set of heat sink fins, wherein the first set of heat sink fins are separated from the second set of heat sink fins by a space;
at least one peripheral wire that is coupled to the at least one rotatable light module at a first end of the at least one peripheral wire and the one or more electrical components at an opposite second end of the at least one peripheral wire; and
a first peripheral grommet that is disposed in the space and around the opposite second end of the at least one peripheral wire at a junction of the at least one peripheral wire and the at least one rotatable light module to form a water tight seal between the at least one peripheral wire and the at least one rotatable light module.
16 . The light fixture of claim 15 , wherein the central housing comprises two or more corner sections disposed at respective corners of the central housing, wherein the at least one rotatable light module is disposed near at least one edge of the central housing between two of the two or more corner sections, wherein the at least one rotatable light module is coupled to the two corner sections such that the rotatable light module can rotate with respect to the two corner sections.
17 . The light fixture of claim 15 , further comprising:
four rotatable light modules disposed at four respective sides of the central housing.
18 . The light fixture of claim 15 , further comprising:
a second peripheral grommet traversing a peripheral opening on the central housing, wherein the second peripheral grommet surrounds the second opposite end of the at least one peripheral wire and forms a water tight seal between the second opposite end of the at least one peripheral wire and the central housing.
19 . The light fixture of claim 15 , wherein the first peripheral grommet is configured to hold the one end of the at least one peripheral wire stationary with respect to the at least one rotatable light module.
20 . The light fixture of claim 15 , wherein at least one heat sink fin of the first set of heat sink fins and the second set of heat sink fins is configured to couple a bracket assembly to the at least one rotatable light module.
