Abstract

In this display device, an electrode layer for an upper electrode and a lower electrode is formed on an array substrate via a dielectric film, one of the upper electrode and the lower electrode is a pixel electrode, the other thereof is a common electrode, and an opening portion for generating horizontal electric field in a liquid crystal layer is formed in accordance with a shape of the electrode layer in a plan view. A CF substrate has a light-shielding film (BM) including a lateral BM portion. The opening portion has a plurality of slits in an X direction, and an end portion of an outermost slit in a Y direction is concealed by the lateral BM portion overlapped in a Z direction.

Claims (45)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

a pixel that includes

a first electrode arranged on the first substrate, the first electrode including

a plurality of first projecting portions extending in a first direction,

a plurality of second projecting portions extending in the first direction,

a first connecting portion that connects the plurality of the first projecting portions, and that extends in a second direction that crosses the first direction,

a second connecting portion that connects the plurality of the second projecting portions, and that extends in the second direction,

a third connecting portion that connects the first connecting portion and the second connecting portion, that extends in the first direction, and that is positioned at an end portion of the pixel in the second direction,

a second electrode arranged on the first substrate,

a dielectric film arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode

a first light shielding film portion that overlaps the third connecting portion, and

an alignment film configured to orient liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer in a first orientation direction that is approximately parallel to the first direction in an initial orientation,

wherein a first one of the second projecting portions is positioned between a first one of the first projecting portions and a second one of the first projecting portions adjacent to the first one of the first projecting portions in the second direction, and

wherein the second electrode is overlapped with the first one of the first projecting portions, the second one of the first projecting portions, and the first one of the second projecting portions.

2. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein at least one of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions includes

a first side extending at a first angle from the first direction, and

a second side opposed to the first side and extending at a second angle from the first direction.

3. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein, when the first direction is defined as 0°, an angle θ corresponding to the first angle and the second angle satisfies θ>0.5°.

4. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein the first side and the second side are not in parallel to each other.

5. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 ,

further comprising a third end projecting portion of the plurality of the first projecting portions that exists at an end portion of the pixel in the second direction,

wherein the first light shielding film portion overlaps at least a part of a slit between the third end projecting portion and the third connecting portion.

6. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 5 , wherein

the first light shielding film portion overlaps at least a part of the third end projecting portion.

7. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein at least one of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions includes:

a first side that is positioned at one end portion of the at least one of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions in the second direction; and

a second side opposed to the first side in the second direction, and that is positioned at an opposed second end portion of the at least one of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions in the second direction,

wherein the alignment film is configured to orient the liquid crystal molecules such that when a voltage is applied:

a first liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal molecules over the first side is rotated clockwise; and

a second liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal molecules over the second side is rotated counterclockwise.

8. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions are arranged so that positions thereof are shifted in the second direction.

9. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein in the second direction, at least one of the first projecting portions has a first length, and at least one of the second projecting portions has a second length, and the first length is different from the second length.

10. The liquid display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein the pixel further includes a switch, and

the switch is overlapped with at least part of the third connecting portion.

11. The liquid display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first connecting portion is positioned at one end portion of the pixel in the first direction, and

the second connecting portion is positioned at another end portion of the pixel in the first direction.

12. The liquid display device according to claim 1 ,

at least one of the first projecting portions and the second projecting portions are trapezoids.
