Abstract

An automated banking machine operative to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. The automated banking machine includes a card reader that is operative to read card data from user cards corresponding to financial accounts. The automated banking machine is operative responsive to the card data to carry out transactions that transfer and/or allocate funds between accounts. The automated banking machine is further operative to provide users with a receipt for transactions conducted. The automated banking machine includes a cash dispenser operative to dispense cash to machine users and to cause the value of cash to be assessed to financial accounts corresponding to card data. The automated banking machine is further operative to receive currency bills or other sheets from a user and to process and store such sheets through operation of a currency accepting device. The account corresponding to card data may be credited for the value of bills or other sheets received.

Claims (45)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a sheet stacking device that is operative to produce a stack of sheets,

wherein the sheet stacking device includes:

a support frame operative to support a rotating assembly, the support frame having at least two side walls and a top wall, the rotating assembly including,

rotating members, and

stationary members extending between the rotating members, where each of the stationary members have cams thereon for engagement with cams on a portion of the rotating members;

wherein the rotating assembly is operative to engage a sheet being moved toward the stack, move the sheet in engagement therewith, and release the engaged sheet in the stack;

a support plate that is movably mounted and operative to support the stack,

wherein the stack of sheets includes a top sheet adjacent to and in operatively engaged relation with the rotating assembly;

a drive that is in operative connection with the support plate;

a sensor that is operative to sense a compressive force acting between the top sheet and the rotating assembly;

an external sensor that is operative to sense the rotating assembly in two diametrically opposed rotational positions;

a processor that is in operative connection with the drive, the sensor, and the external sensor;

wherein the processor is operative to cause operation of the drive responsive to the sensor and external sensor; and

wherein the processor is operative to cause the drive to move the support plate responsive to compressive force sensed by the sensor acting between the rotating assembly and the top sheet.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the support frame is further operative to support:

a flip shaft assembly, and

an idler shaft assembly,

wherein the flip shaft assembly is operatively connected to the idler shaft assembly by at least one belt, the flip shaft assembly further comprising:

at least one deformable roller for engagement with the sheet, and

at least one pulley.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the rotating assembly, flip shaft assembly, and idler shaft assembly are operatively connected to the support frame by releasable couplings.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2 , the at least one belt includes cleats for engagement with the sheet.

5. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the deformable rollers are comprised of a foam material.

6. The apparatus according to claim 2 , the rotating member comprising an indicating member used to detect rotational position of the assembly by the processor.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the rotating members further comprise at least one gripper member and at least one sensor member.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , the at least one gripper member further comprising,

a pair of slots which extends adjacent the periphery of the at least one gripper member, the slots being formed by a curved finger portion which is bounded by a radially inward facing surface.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the outer circumference of the at least one gripper member includes a radially outward extending circumferential bump portion.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the radially outward extending circumferential bump portion biasingly engages the sheet in sandwiched relation between the deformable roller and the at least one gripper member.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising:

an opening for allowing a sheet to pass through,

a guide for directing the sheet into the at least one gripper member, and

a sheet sensor at the opening operatively connected to the processor which operates to sense a leading edge and trailing edge of the sheet passing through the opening, the sheet sensor being operative to cause the at least one gripper member to begin rotating.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein as the at least one gripper member rotates, the belt cleats and at least one deformable roller engage the sheet and pull it towards the stack.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein once the sheet sensor senses the trailing edge of the sheet having passed through the opening and sufficient movement of the at least one deformable roller and at least one belt has occurred to move the trailing edge inward beyond the finger portion, the processor causes the at least one gripper member to rotate so that the finger portion and its associated slot is in a position to engage the leading edge of the next sheet.

14. The apparatus according to claim 11 , the at least one gripper member further including a gripper portion that is movably mounted, the gripper portion includes sheet engaging portions at opposed ends thereof.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein the at least one gripper member includes a removably attached gripper cover.

16. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the at least one gripper member further comprises:

a gripper body portion,

at least one spring, and

at least one curved finger portion rotatably mounted to the body gripper body portion and biased by the spring toward the radially outward position.

17. The apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein the indicating member and sensing member include at least one magnet mounted in supporting connection therewith for being sensed by external sensor.

18. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the external sensor is positioned outside the sheet stacking device.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18 , wherein the external sensor is a Hall effect sensor that is able to detect in an electrically contactless manner the rotating assembly in two diametrically opposed rotational positions.
