Abstract

Processes and systems for preparing pipe for machine processing to form pin and box ends for assembly into pipelines using mechanical press-fit pipe joints that are fully measured and documented during both manufacturing and assembly. Installed pipelines include pipeline data monitoring systems coupled to a pipeline data management center for receiving, archiving, and analysis of the data records to aid in administration, operation and management, and troubleshooting of pipelines.

Claims (33)

1. A process, carried out on a bench having a stationary pipe clamp on a first end and a hydraulic ram for operating a movable tooling support on a second opposite end for preparing pipe sections for assembly in a pipeline using mechanical press-fit pipe joints to join the pipe sections, comprising the steps of:

performing a pre-preparation process for each section of taw pipe;

forming respective pin and box ends of each section of pipe for joining using the mechanical press-fit pipe joints;

measuring and storing parameters for hydraulic pressure P and displacement length L associated with forming the pin and box ends of the pipe sections using a process monitoring computer system, wherein a data record of the at least two parameters of the formation of each pin and box end is created and stored;

marking each pin and box end of each pipe section with a permanent encoded data panel recording identification and end preparation data for the associated pin or box end; and

coating the formed pipe sections according to specifications applicable to the expected use of the pipe sections in a pipeline.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of performing a pre-preparation process comprises the steps of:

inspecting raw pipe sections for acceptance into the pre-preparation process;

beveling, to a predetermined angle, an inside edge of an end of each pipe section to be formed with a pin end configuration;

bypassing the previous step if the end of the pipe section is to be formed with a box end configuration;

cleaning the inner and outer surfaces of the ends of the pipe section such that average surface roughness R a does not exceed 1 to 3 mil; and

transferring the pre-prepped pipe section to a storage location or to an end-forming location.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming the pin end comprises the step of:

forming the outside diameter of the pipe to a taper of approximately two degrees beginning a first distance from the open end of the pipe to a second lesser distance from the open end and a taper of approximately five degrees from the second lesser distance to the open end.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming the box end comprises the step of:

forming the inside diameter of the pipe to a taper of approximately two degrees beginning a first distance from the open end of the pipe to a second lesser distance from the open end and a taper of approximately four degrees from the second lesser distance to the open end.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming respective pin and box ends of each section of pipe comprises the steps of:

securing the pipe end to be formed in the stationary pipe clamp on the bench and securing a die for forming the pin or box end of the pipe section in the movable tooling support; and

operating the hydraulic ram to move the movable tooling support toward the stationary pipe clamp to engage the die with the pipe end to be formed.

6. The process of claim 2 , wherein the step of beveling to a predetermined angle comprises the step of:

machining the inside edge of the pin end of the pipe section to an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the pipe section of approximately 8 degrees from a distance of approximately 1.0 inch from the end of the pipe section.

7. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of measuring and storing the parameters P and L comprises the steps of:

measuring the hydraulic pressure P for operating the hydraulic ram using a pressure sensor;

measuring the length L of the displacement of the die within or over the pipe end being formed using a displacement sensor; and

storing the measured parameter P and L in a database.

8. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of marking each pin and box end of each pipe section comprises the steps of:

forming a permanent encoded data panel in the surface of the pipe section proximate each end of the pipe section that contains the identification and the end preparation data for the associated pin or box end of the pipe section wherein the data panel is readable using a code reading device.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the step of coating comprises the steps of:

pre-heating the pipe section to remove any residue of corrosion inhibitor material;

preparing the surface of the pipe to a bare metal finish using a sand blasting or honing process;

masking any portion of the pin end and box end necessary to preserve the bare metal finish;

installing a data monitoring bus if required by the customer specification; and

applying a chemically resistant epoxy coating including any primer coat as needed.
