Abstract

A container for bone cement includes a first member defining a chamber, which contains a first ingredient. The chamber also includes a second member movably coupled to the first member. The second member includes a mixing device that is movably disposed within the first chamber, and the second member defines a second chamber containing a second ingredient. The container additional includes an opening device that selectively opens the second chamber and allows the second ingredient to enter from the second chamber into the first chamber. The mixing device is movable within the first chamber to promote mixing of the first ingredient and the second ingredient to prepare the bone cement. A corresponding method of preparing bone cement also disclosed.

Claims (35)

1. A device for producing bone cement, comprising:

a first tubular member that defines a first chamber for containing a first ingredient;

a cap removably attachable to one end of the first tubular member, the cap including a central aperture and a port configured to connect to a hose enabling coupling the first chamber to a vacuum source;

a second member including an extension member and a mixing device disposed within the first chamber and coupled to one end of the extension member, the extension member extending from the first chamber through the central aperture and movable through the central aperture for mixing ingredients in the first chamber, the second member comprising a second chamber sealed by a sealed member;

an opening device within the first chamber, the opening device configured to selectively pierce the sealing member of the second chamber, thereby allowing a second ingredient in the second chamber to enter the first chamber, the mixing device movable within the first chamber, relative to the opening device, to mix the first ingredient and the second ingredient after the second ingredient enters the first chamber to produce bone cement; and

an outlet connected to the first chamber for dispensing the bone cement,

wherein the port is separate from the central aperture allowing the extension member to be moved through the central aperture when the port is connected to the vacuum source to draw a vacuum on the first chamber.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the mixing device is rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the first tubular member to mix the first ingredient with the second ingredient.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the mixing device is movable along a longitudinal axis of the first tubular member to mix the first ingredient and the second ingredient.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the second chamber is disposed outside of the first tubular member.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a piston movably disposed within the first tubular member.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein movement of the piston along a longitudinal axis of the first tubular member changes the volume of the first chamber.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the piercing member of the opening device substantially plugs the second chamber after the second ingredient enters the first chamber.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sealing member and the piercing member of the opening device are substantially aligned along a longitudinal axis of the first tubular member.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a guard member that selectively limits movement of the sealing member toward the opening device.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first ingredient comprises a powder and the second ingredient comprises a solution.

11. A device for producing bone cement, comprising:

a first member that defines a first chamber containing a first ingredient;

a second member movably coupled to the first member and containing a second ingredient;

a cap attached to an end of the first member, the cap including a central aperture and a port separate from the central aperture, the port configured to connect to a hose enabling coupling the first chamber to a vacuum source;

a piercing device within the first chamber, the piercing device configured to selectively pierce a seal of the second member, thereby allowing the second ingredient to enter the first chamber, the second member movable relative to the first member to mix the first ingredient and the second ingredient inside the first chamber to produce bone cement; and

an outlet for dispensing the bone cement from the first chamber.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the second member comprises a mixing device that moves within the first chamber when the second member moves relative to the first member.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the second member is movable relative to the piercing device.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the mixing device is rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the first member to mix the first ingredient with the second ingredient.

15. The device of claim 12 , wherein the mixing device is movable along a longitudinal axis of the first member to mix the first ingredient and the second ingredient.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein a portion of the second ingredient is disposed outside of the first member before the piercing device selectively pierces the seal of the second member.

17. The device of claim 11 , further comprising a piston movably disposed within the first member.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein movement of the piston along a longitudinal axis of the first member changes the volume of the first chamber.

19. The device of claim 11 , wherein the piercing member device substantially plugs the second chamber after the second ingredient enters the first chamber.

20. The device of claim 11 , wherein the seal and the piercing device are substantially aligned along a longitudinal axis of the first member.

21. The device of claim 11 , further comprising a guard member that selectively limits movement of the seal toward the piercing device.

22. The device of claim 11 , wherein the first ingredient comprises a powder and the second ingredient comprises a solution.

23. The device of claim 1 , wherein the port is positioned between the central aperture and an edge of the cap.

24. The device of claim 11 , wherein the port is positioned between the central aperture and an edge of the cap.
