Abstract

An apparatus for performing a vascular treatment includes an intraluminal member that is controllingly moved during the vascular treatment. The intraluminal member of the vascular treatment device can be connected to a motor. The rotation direction of the intraluminal member can be reversed to reduce the incidence and duration of vein entanglement during a vascular ablation procedure. Reversal of direction could occur automatically, or in response to a sensor such as a load sensor provided as part of the motorized drive system.

Claims (53)

1 . A vascular treatment device, comprising:

an elongated intraluminal member shaped and dimensioned for passage through blood vessels of a subject; and

a motorized drive system coupled to the intraluminal member, the motorized drive system comprising a motor drive circuit and a motor, wherein the motorized drive system is configured to:

rotate the intraluminal member or portion thereof in a first direction, and

periodically change the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof to perform rotational oscillation,

wherein the periodic changing of the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member occurs at random time intervals, and

wherein the rotational oscillation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof damages an inner wall of the blood vessels, and inhibits entanglement of the intraluminal member or portion thereof with the inner wall of the blood vessels.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the motor comprises a reversible motor.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the drive system comprises a kinematic chain.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the drive system comprises a gearbox.

7 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the motorized drive system is configured to periodically reverse a rotation direction of the reversible motor.

8 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the motor control and driver circuit are programmable.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the motorized drive system is configured to reverse the direction of rotation when a load threshold is reached or exceeded.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the intraluminal member comprises a vein wall disruptor.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , comprising:

a source of sclerosant; and

a fluid channel between the source of sclerosant and the distal end of the intraluminal member.

33 . A vascular treatment device, comprising:

an elongated intraluminal member shaped and dimensioned for passage through blood vessels of a subject; and

a motorized drive system coupled to the intraluminal member, the motorized drive system comprising a motor drive circuit and a motor, wherein the motorized drive system is configured to:

rotate the intraluminal member or portion thereof in a first direction, and

periodically change the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof to perform rotational oscillation,

wherein the periodic changing of the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member occurs for every full rotation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof, and

wherein the rotational oscillation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof damages an inner wall of the blood vessels, and inhibits entanglement of the intraluminal member or portion thereof with the inner wall of the blood vessels.

34 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the periodic changing of the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member occurs after a set number of rotations or fraction thereof.

35 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the motor comprises a reversible motor.

36 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the drive system comprises a kinematic chain.

37 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the drive system comprises a gearbox.

38 . The apparatus of claim 35 , wherein the motorized drive system is further configured to periodically reverse a rotation direction of the reversible motor.

39 . The apparatus of claim 38 , wherein the motor control and driver circuit are programmable.

40 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein a distal end of the intraluminal member comprises a vein wall disruptor.

41 . The apparatus of claim 40 , comprising:

a source of sclerosant; and

a fluid channel between the source of sclerosant and the distal end of the intraluminal member.

42 . A vascular treatment device, comprising:

an elongated intraluminal member shaped and dimensioned for passage through blood vessels of a subject; and

a motorized drive system coupled to the intraluminal member, the motorized drive system comprising a motor drive circuit and a motor, wherein the motorized drive system is configured to:

rotate the intraluminal member or portion thereof in a first direction, and

periodically change the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof to perform rotational oscillation,

wherein the periodic changing of the direction of rotation of the intraluminal member occurs at defined time intervals, and

wherein the rotational oscillation of the intraluminal member or portion thereof damages an inner wall of the blood vessels, and inhibits entanglement of the intraluminal member or portion thereof with the inner wall of the blood vessels.

43 . The apparatus of claim 42 , wherein the motor comprises a reversible motor.

44 . The apparatus of claim 42 , wherein the drive system comprises a kinematic chain.

45 . The apparatus of claim 42 , wherein the drive system comprises a gearbox.

46 . The apparatus of claim 43 , wherein the motorized drive system is further configured to periodically reverse a rotation direction of the reversible motor.

47 . The apparatus of claim 46 , wherein the motor control and driver circuit are programmable.

48 . The apparatus of claim 42 , wherein a distal end of the intraluminal member comprises a vein wall disruptor.

49 . The apparatus of claim 48 , comprising:

a source of sclerosant; and

a fluid channel between the source of sclerosant and the distal end of the intraluminal member.
