Abstract

Various embodiments of a fluid handling system are disclosed herein. For example, the fluid handling system can include a catheter assembly and a console configured to control the operation of the catheter assembly. A removable interface member can be configured to provide fluid and electrical communication between the catheter assembly and the console.

Claims (23)

1. A method for priming and operating a catheter assembly, the catheter assembly comprising an elongate body and an operative device, the method comprising:

inserting the operative device of the catheter assembly into a priming vessel;

securing a proximal portion of the priming vessel to a distal portion of the elongate body, such that the elongate body is in fluid communication with the priming vessel; and

delivering fluid through the elongate body and into the priming vessel to expel air from within the catheter assembly through a distal end of the priming vessel.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing the priming vessel from the catheter assembly prior to inserting the catheter assembly into a patient's body.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, after removing the priming vessel, inserting the operative device of the catheter assembly into a vascular system of a patient.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising coupling an infusion system to a console housing, the infusion system configured to supply fluid to the catheter assembly.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein coupling the infusion system comprises positioning an interface body of the infusion system in an interface aperture of the console housing, the interface body comprising an occlusion bed, a tube segment mounted on the interface body near the occlusion bed, and an electrical component.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein coupling the infusion system comprises inserting the interface body through the interface aperture until a pump roller of the console housing compresses the tube segment against the occlusion bed and until an electrical interconnect of the console housing is electrically coupled to the electrical component of the interface body.

7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, after the inserting, supplying fluid distally to the operative device by way of the infusion system.

8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising, after the inserting, removing waste fluid from the catheter assembly during a treatment procedure by way of the infusion system.

9. The method of claim 3 , wherein the impeller is expandable.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an expandable cannula in fluid communication with the operative device.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising, after the inserting, expanding the expandable cannula.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, after the inserting, expanding the operative device.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operative device comprises an impeller.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, after the inserting the operative device into the vascular system, rotating the impeller to pump blood through a vascular system of a patient.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing relative movement between the priming vessel and the operative device to collapse the operative device to a stored configuration.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the priming vessel comprises a priming housing disposed about at least a portion of the operative device.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retracting the operative device within the elongate body after expelling air from the catheter body.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the priming vessel does not enter a patient's body.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling a seal cap to the proximal portion of the priming vessel to prevent air flow in the proximal direction into the elongate body.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling a gas permeable membrane to the distal end of the priming vessel to air to escape from the priming vessel during priming.
