Golf club with milled striking face
A golf club is disclosed that has a golf club head with a face having peaks or ridges and deep grooves or valleys. The deep grooves or valleys promote improved “feel” and/or reduced “smash factor” which may be particularly desirable when the golf club head comprises a putter face. The deep grooves or valleys may eliminate the need for costly soft metal alloy faces and/or polymeric or other resilient inserts between the face and the body of the golf club head.
1. A putter head comprising:
a heel, a toe opposite the heel, a sole, a top line opposite the sole, and a forwardly-facing striking face, the striking face including:
a geometric center;
a virtual elliptical region having a center coincident with the geometric center, a length dimension of 1.5 inches, and a height dimension of 0.75 inch;
a first groove pattern comprising a plurality of arcuate first grooves, each of the arcuate first grooves having, in the virtual elliptical region of the striking face, a depth of 0.010-0.018 inch; and
a second groove pattern that is substantially a mirror image of the first groove pattern overlaid onto the first groove pattern and comprising a plurality of arcuate second grooves that have, in the virtual elliptical region, a depth substantially the same as that of the arcuate first grooves,
wherein each groove of the arcuate first grooves and the arcuate second grooves comprises an arc of a circle, and the arcuate first and second grooves fatal, at intersecting regions, four-sided ridges that decrease in area from a lowermost region of the virtual elliptical region to an uppermost region of the virtual elliptical region.
2. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein
an imaginary circle containing each arcuate groove comprises a center positioned below a center line of the striking face.
3. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein the first groove pattern is formed substantially across the striking face.
4. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein the top line comprises a chamfer.
5. The putter head of claim 4 , wherein the chamfer is angled 10-60 degrees relative to the striking face.
6. The putter head of claim 4 , wherein the chamfer intersects at least a portion of the first groove pattern.
7. The putter head of claim 4 , wherein the chamfer runs substantially across the top line.
8. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein the four-side ridges decrease in area from a lowermost region of the striking face to an uppermost region of the striking face.
9. The putter head of claim 8 , wherein the circle has a diameter of 3 inches.
10. The putter head of claim 9 , wherein the circle has a center positioned below the sole of the putter head.
11. The putter head of claim 10 , wherein the center is positioned 5.5 mm below the sole of the putter head.
12. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein along any cross section taken perpendicular to the striking face and parallel to the top line, each of the arcuate first grooves are substantially equally spaced from adjacent arcuate first grooves, and each of the arcuate second grooves are substantially equally spaced from adjacent arcuate second grooves.
13. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein along any cross section through the putter head taken perpendicular to the striking face and perpendicular to the top line, the arcuate first grooves and the arcuate second grooves increase in width from the top line to the sole.
14. The putter head of claim 1 , wherein the arcuate first grooves and the arcuate second grooves each have a depth of 0.012 inch and a width, as measured along a line perpendicular to a tangent of each groove, of 0.006 inch.
15. The putter head of claim 14 , wherein each groove of the arcuate first grooves and each groove of the arcuate second grooves comprises opposing side walls that transition inwardly and downwardly from adjacent ridges toward a lowermost portion of the groove.
16. The putter head of claim 15 , wherein the opposing side walls are curved or are straight and inclined.
