Abstract

A delivery system for delivering and deploying a medical implant, such as a prosthetic heart valve, includes an elongated support member, a sheath, and a tip. The sheath is movable relative to the elongated support member between a distal position overlying the medical implant and a proximal position exposing the medical implant for release from the delivery system. The tip is attached to the elongated support member and is positioned at a distal end of the sheath when the sheath is in the distal position. The tip has a compressed condition and an expanded condition, and a maximum diameter in the expanded condition that is larger than the outer diameter of the sheath.

Claims (19)

1. A delivery system for delivering and deploying a medical implant, comprising:

an elongated support member configured to hold the medical implant;

a sheath having an outer diameter surrounding at least a portion of the elongated support member, the sheath being movable in a longitudinal direction between a proximal position and a distal position relative to the elongated support member; and

a tip attached to the elongated support member, the tip being positioned at a distal end of the sheath when the sheath is in the distal position, the tip having a compressed condition, an expanded condition and a variable diameter along the length thereof, the variable diameter including a maximum diameter in the compressed condition, the maximum diameter in the compressed condition being greater than the outer diameter of the distal end of the sheath, the tip being formed at least in part of a porous material adapted to expand upon absorption of liquids.

2. The delivery system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tip includes an inner member formed of a first material and an outer portion formed of the porous material.

3. The delivery system as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the inner member is formed of an elastic material.

4. The delivery system as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the porous material is less rigid than the elastic material.

5. The delivery system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the variable diameter includes a maximum diameter in the expanded condition, the maximum diameter in the expanded condition being larger than the outer diameter of the distal end of the sheath.

6. A delivery system for delivering and deploying a medical implant, comprising:

an elongated support member configured to hold the medical implant, the elongated support member having a fluid conduit therein;

a sheath having an outer diameter surrounding at least a portion of the elongated support member, the sheath being movable in a longitudinal direction between a proximal position and a distal position relative to the elongated support member; and

a tip attached to the elongated support member, the tip being positioned at a distal end of the sheath when the sheath is in the distal position, the tip having a compressed condition, an expanded condition and a variable diameter along the length thereof, the variable diameter including a maximum diameter in the compressed condition, the maximum diameter in the compressed condition being greater than the outer diameter of the distal end of the sheath, the tip including an inner member and an outer portion surrounding the inner member, the inner member including a lumen extending in the longitudinal direction and at least one supply conduit in fluid communication with the fluid conduit in the elongated support member, the supply conduit being in fluid communication with the outer portion of the tip, the tip being formed at least in part of a porous material adapted to expand upon absorption of a fluid substance.

7. The delivery system as claimed in claim 6 , further comprising a fluid source in fluid communication with the fluid conduit in the elongated support member.

8. The delivery system as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the fluid source is a source of a liquid, gel or gas.

9. The delivery system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the liquid is saline.

10. The delivery system as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the fluid conduit is an annular channel extending in the longitudinal direction through the elongated support member.

11. The delivery system as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the outer portion of the tip is formed at least in part of the porous material.

12. The delivery system as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the tip further includes an outer layer surrounding the porous material, the outer layer being formed of a liquid-impermeable material.

13. The delivery system as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the variable diameter includes a maximum diameter in the expanded condition, the maximum diameter in the expanded condition being larger than the outer diameter of the distal end of the sheath.
