Abstract

A method and apparatus that utilizes a force-time integral for real time estimation of steam pop in catheter-based ablation systems. The apparatus measures the force exerted by a contact ablation probe on a target tissue and an energization parameter delivered to the ablation probe. The exerted force and energization parameter can be utilized to provide an estimation of the probability of steam pop. In one embodiment, the force and energization metrics can be used as feedback to establish a desired contact force and energization level combination to prevent steam popping.

Claims (19)

1. A method for delivering ablation power from a power source to a target tissue during a medical procedure using a processor connected to a storage medium that stores programming instructions to be carried out by the processor, the programming instructions comprising the following:

receiving an output signal from a force sensor operatively coupled with an ablation head of a catheter in contact with the target tissue during the medical procedure, wherein the output signal is indicative of a contact force exerted on the ablation head by the target tissue;

estimating a probability of steam pop based on the output signal and a level of ablation power;

delivering the level of ablation power from the power source to the target tissue via the ablation head, wherein the delivered level of ablation power is based on the contact force such that a corresponding estimated probability of steam pop remains no greater than an acceptable value and such that the delivered level of ablation power is sufficiently high to form a lesion on the target tissue; and

utilizing a zone of optimum combinations of the contact force and the delivered level of ablation power, wherein a range of the contact force and delivered level of ablation power within the zone of optimum combinations (i) ensures that the delivered level of ablation power is sufficiently high to form the lesion on the target tissue and (ii) maintains the delivered level of ablation power relative to the contact force such that the corresponding estimated probability of steam pop remains no greater than the acceptable value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acceptable value of the probability of steam pop is zero.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the zone of optimum combinations is determined by the processor based on data acquired during the medical procedure and stored in the storage medium.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the power source is configured to generate RF power to energize the ablation head.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the power source is configured to generate electrical current to energize the ablation head.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the power source is configured to keep the delivered level of ablation power between 20 and 30 watts, and wherein the processor is further adapted to deliver ablation power to the ablation head only when the contact force is between 10 and 30 gmf.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acceptable value of the probability of steam pop is zero.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the instructions and visualization to an operator of the ablation head.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the instructions to a robotic controller of the ablation head.

10. A method for delivering ablation power from a power source to a target tissue during a medical procedure using a processor connected to a storage medium that stores programming instructions to be carried out by the processor, the programming instructions comprising the following:

receiving an output signal from a force sensor operatively coupled with an ablation head of a catheter in contact with the target tissue during the medical procedure, wherein the output signal is indicative of a contact force exerted on the ablation head by the target tissue;

estimating a probability of steam pop based on the output signal and a level of ablation power; and

delivering the level of ablation power from the power source to the target tissue via the ablation head, wherein the delivered level of ablation power is based on the contact force such that a corresponding estimated probability of steam pop remains no greater than an acceptable value and such that the delivered level of ablation power is sufficiently high to form a lesion on the target tissue and the delivered level of ablation power is controlled so as

(i) to decrease the delivered level of ablation power when the output signal indicative of contact force increases to a first level at which a combination of the delivered level of ablation power and the contact force may cause steam pop, and

(ii) to increase the delivered level of ablation power when the output signal indicative of contact force decreases to a second level at which the combination of the delivered level of ablation power and the contact force would otherwise be considered insufficient to form the lesion.
