Micrograft for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms and method for use
A device for occluding a vasculature of a patient including a micrograft having an absorbent polymeric structure with a lumen of transporting blood. The micrograft has a series of peaks and valleys formed by crimping. The occluding device is sufficiently small and flexible to be tracked on a guidewire and/or pushed through a microcatheter to a site within the vasculature of the patient. Delivery systems for delivering the micrografts are also disclosed.
1. A device for inducing blood stagnation in an intracranial aneurysm, the device comprising a plurality of yarns, the yarns formed from a plurality of filaments, the filaments of the yarns having spaces therebetween to induce flow of blood between the filaments of the yarn to transport blood along the yarns, and the yarns formed into a permeable structure to allow inflow of blood between the yarns and into the device, and the yarns formed into a tubular structure having a distal opening and a lumen to allow inflow of blood through the distal opening and within the device in a capillary action, the device becoming saturated with blood to cause stagnation of blood and blood clotting, wherein the device is non-expanding such that the device has a first radial dimension in a delivery condition and the first radial dimension in a placement condition.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device has an outer diameter less than about 0.027 inches.
3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the yarns are braided to form a tubular braided structure and the braided structure has at least an 80 pick per inch count.
4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the device has an inner diameter less than about 0.025 inches.
5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the device includes a radiopaque element.
6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device has a non-linear heat set shape, the device delivered in a substantially linear configuration and returning toward its non-linear shape when placed within the aneurysm.
7. The device of claim 1 , wherein a wall of the device is compressible.
8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is crimped during manufacture to reduce stiffness.
9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is compressed in manufacture to increase the braid angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the device.
10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is crimped during manufacture to increase the pick per inch count.
11. An occluding vascular micrograft for treating intracranial aneurysms, the micrograft being non-expanding and having a tubular body formed of a plurality of filaments configured for placement within an intracranial aneurysm, the micrograft having a lumen extending longitudinally therein and a distal opening to allow blood flow through the distal opening and into the lumen, the micrograft configured to a) allow blood into the micrograft for transport within the lumen of the tubular body in a capillary action and subsequently b) cause stagnation of blood in the micrograft to thereby cause blood clotting as blood flows through the lumen in the tubular body and through openings between the filaments.
12. The micrograft of claim 11 , wherein the micrograft is movable to a substantially linear configuration for delivery and returns to a non-linear configuration for placement within the intracranial aneurysm.
13. The micrograft of claim 12 , wherein a wall of the micrograft is compressible.
14. A vascular graft configured for inducing blood stagnation in an intracranial aneurysm of a patient, the vascular graft comprising:
a non-expandable absorbent polymeric structure forming an outermost layer in a delivery and a placement condition of the vascular graft;
a core element having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen within the core element for receiving blood, the core element positioned inside the polymeric structure and in contact with the polymeric structure along a length and attached to the polymeric structure, the core element having a plurality of proximal coils; and
a tube having a first end and a second opposite end extending within the proximal coils and the polymeric structure attached to and overlying an outer surface of the tube.
15. The vascular graft of claim 14 , wherein the polymeric structure comprises a braid, and the braid is attached to the tube.
16. The vascular graft of claim 14 , wherein the polymeric structure comprises a braid, and the tube includes an opening configured to receive a delivery wire.
17. The vascular graft of claim 16 , wherein the tube extends proximally of the polymeric structure.
18. The vascular graft of claim 14 , wherein a capillary effect is created within the vascular graft when the polymeric structure is exposed to blood such that blood is transported in a proximal direction through the vascular graft and in various directions within the graft to saturate the graft with blood to cause thrombosis.
