Abstract

A system, apparatus and method for enhancing documents, including using a graphical capture device, are described herein.

Claims (52)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a user selection of a game that is associated with a rendered document;

performing, by a capture device associated with the computing device, an identification scan of the rendered document, the identification scan resulting in a document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

providing, by the computing device and to a server, the document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

receiving, by the computing device and from the server, and in response to providing the document identifier that identifies the rendered document, a plurality of game events for the game that is associated with the rendered document; and

processing each game event of the plurality of game events, the processing of each game event comprising:

presenting, by a display associated with the computing device, user instructions related to the game event;

receiving, from the capture device associated with the computing device, a captured region of the rendered document;

determining, by the computing device, whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to a correct response for the game event; and

in response to the determining, updating, by the computing device, a current game status of the game.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, user instructions that include an indication of the rendered document that is associated with the game.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of game of events is received by the computing device and from the server as an event package that includes one or more enhancements for the rendered document.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising providing, by the computing device and to the server, and before the plurality of game events are processed, a device identifier associated with the computing device, wherein the device identifier and a document identifier of the rendered document are used to log a start of the game.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , further comprising providing, by the computing device and to the server, a final game status after the plurality of game events are processed, wherein the device identifier, the document identifier, and the final game status are used to log an end of the game.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , the processing of each game event further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, an indication of whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to the correct response for the game event.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the user instructions related to the game event include a time limit for receiving the captured region of the rendered document.

8. A computer-readable storage device storing software including instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a user selection of a game that is associated with a rendered document;

performing, by a capture device associated with the computing device, an identification scan of the rendered document, the identification scan resulting in a document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

providing, by the computing device and to a server, the document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

receiving, by the computing device and from the server, and in response to providing the document identifier that identifies the rendered document, a plurality of game events for the game that is associated with the rendered document; and

processing each game event of the plurality of game events, the processing of each game event comprising:

presenting, by a display associated with the computing device, user instructions related to the game event;

receiving, from the capture device associated with the computing device, a captured region of the rendered document;

determining, by the computing device, whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to a correct response for the game event; and

in response to the determining, updating, by the computing device, a current game status of the game.

9. The computer-readable storage device of claim 8 , the operations further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, user instructions that include an indication of the rendered document that is associated with the game.

10. The computer-readable storage device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of game of events is received by the computing device and from the server as an event package that includes one or more enhancements for the rendered document.

11. The computer-readable storage device of claim 8 , the operations further comprising:

providing, by the computing device and to the server, and before the plurality of game events are processed, a device identifier associated with the computing device, wherein the device identifier and a document identifier of the rendered document are used to log a start of the game; and

providing, by the computing device and to the server, a final game status after the plurality of game events are processed, wherein the device identifier, the document identifier, and the final game status are used to log an end of the game.

12. The computer-readable storage device of claim 8 , the processing of each game event further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, an indication of whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to the correct response for the game event.

13. The computer-readable storage device of claim 8 , wherein the user instructions related to the game event include a time limit for receiving the captured region of the rendered document.

14. A system, comprising:

one or more data processing apparatus; and

a computer-readable storage device including instructions executable by the data processing apparatus and upon such execution cause the data processing apparatus to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a user selection of a game that is associated with a rendered document;

performing, by a capture device associated with the computing device, an identification scan of the rendered document, the identification scan resulting in a document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

providing, by the computing device and to a server, the document identifier that corresponds to the rendered document;

receiving, by the computing device and from the server, and in response to providing the document identifier that identifies the rendered document, a plurality of game events for the game that is associated with the rendered document; and

processing each game event of the plurality of game events, the processing of each game event comprising:

presenting, by a display associated with the computing device, user instructions related to the game event;

receiving, from the capture device associated with the computing device, a captured region of the rendered document;

determining, by the computing device, whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to a correct response for the game event; and

in response to the determining, updating, by the computing device, a current game status of the game.

15. The system of claim 14 , the operations further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, user instructions that include an indication of the rendered document that is associated with the game.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of game of events is received by the computing device and from the server as an event package that includes one or more enhancements for the rendered document.

17. The system of claim 14 , the operations further comprising:

providing, by the computing device and to the server, and before the plurality of game events are processed, a device identifier associated with the computing device, wherein the device identifier and a document identifier of the rendered document are used to log a start of the game; and

providing, by the computing device and to the server, a final game status after the plurality of game events are processed, wherein the device identifier, the document identifier, and the final game status are used to log an end of the game.

18. The system of claim 14 , the processing of each game event further comprising presenting, by the display associated with the computing device, an indication of whether the captured region of the rendered document corresponds to the correct response for the game event.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the user instructions related to the game event include a time limit for receiving the captured region of the rendered document.
