Abstract

Devices, methods and systems are disclosed for assisting patients in behavioral modification and cessation programs aimed at terminating undesired behaviors such as smoking, alcohol use and others. Patient devices configured to be easily carried or worn including test units such as carbon monoxide blood level sensors with automated patient prompting for self-testing, analysis of test results and data logging are included in a networked system with a specifically designed treatment modality. Devices and methods disclosed are particularly suited to use in smoking cessation treatment and programs.

Claims (45)

1. A method of quantifying an individual's smoking behavior, comprising:

obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air from the individual over a period of time using a detector unit configured to be carried by the individual and recording a collection time associated with each sample of exhaled air;

determining whether each of the samples is sufficiently compliant for measurement;

measuring an amount of exhaled carbon monoxide for each of the samples of exhaled air determined to be compliant using a sensor in the detector unit;

transmitting data relating to the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time for each sample from the detector unit to a remote unit which is configured to be carried by the individual separately from the detector unit and which is synchronized with the detector unit;

compiling a dataset comprising the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time for each sample of exhaled air via the remote unit;

identifying trends in a smoking behavior with respect to at least one peak of a carbon monoxide level measured from the samples of exhaled air over the period of time;

quantifying an exposure of exhaled carbon monoxide over an interval of time within the period of time via the remote unit;

determining progress of the individual towards an abstinence trend based on the carbon monoxide levels measured from the samples of exhaled air; and

displaying the progress of the individual towards the abstinence trend.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying the trends that correlate exhaled carbon monoxide load with respect to the interval of time.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises sequentially obtaining the plurality of samples of exhaled air.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises generating a signal to the individual to provide at least one sample of exhaled air.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises alerting the individual on a repeating basis to provide the sample of exhaled air over the period of time.

6. The method of claim 1 where measuring an amount of exhaled carbon monoxide comprises using a portable sensor.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein quantifying an exposure of exhaled carbon monoxide comprises correlating a function of exhaled carbon monoxide versus time over the period of time using the dataset.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the input data from the individual further comprises recording a time of the input.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining a number of cigarettes avoided by the individual; and

displaying the number of cigarettes avoided by the individual.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time associated with each sample of exhaled air to an electronic device.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising obtaining a result of a behavioral questionnaire from the individual and displaying the result of the behavioral questionnaire over the interval of time.

12. A method of quantifying an individual's smoking behavior, comprising:

obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air from the individual over a period of time using a detector unit configured to be carried by the individual and recording a collection time associated with each sample of exhaled air;

determining whether each of the samples is sufficiently compliant for measurement;

measuring an amount of exhaled carbon monoxide for each of the samples of exhaled air determined to be compliant using a sensor on the detector unit;

transmitting data relating to the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time for each sample from the detector unit to a remote unit which is configured to be carried by the individual separately from the detector unit and which is synchronized with the detector unit;

compiling a dataset comprising the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time for each sample of exhaled air via the remote unit;

correlating a function of an exposure of exhaled carbon monoxide over an interval of time using the dataset over the period of time via the remote unit;

identifying trends in a smoking behavior with respect to at least one peak of a carbon monoxide level measured from the samples of exhaled air over the interval of time from the dataset;

displaying the trends upon a display;

determining progress of the individual towards an abstinence trend based on the carbon monoxide levels measured from the samples of exhaled air; and

displaying the progress of the individual towards the abstinence trend.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising displaying the trends that correlate exhaled carbon monoxide load with respect to the interval of time.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises sequentially obtaining the plurality of samples of exhaled air.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises generating a signal to the individual to provide at least one sample of exhaled air.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein obtaining a plurality of samples of exhaled air comprises alerting the individual on a repeating basis to provide the sample of exhaled air over the period of time.

17. The method of claim 12 where measuring an amount of exhaled carbon monoxide comprises using a portable sensor.

18. The method of claim 12 further comprising altering a therapy provided to the individual in response to identified trends from the dataset.

19. The method of claim 12 wherein receiving the input data from the individual further comprises recording a time of the input.

20. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

determining a number of cigarettes avoided by the individual; and

displaying the number of cigarettes avoided by the individual.

21. The method of claim 12 further comprising transmitting the amount of exhaled carbon monoxide and the collection time associated with each sample of exhaled air to an electronic device.

22. The method of claim 12 further comprising obtaining a result of a behavioral questionnaire from the individual and displaying the result of the behavioral questionnaire over the interval of time.
