Abstract

A mobile device for accessing content stored on a remote server over a mobile network includes a processor configured to direct the mobile device to send a request directing a management server to initiate a transaction.

Claims (67)

1. A mobile device for accessing content stored on a first server over a mobile network, the mobile device, comprising:

memory; and

a processor configured to direct the mobile device to:

receive input relating to composition of an email message;

receive input relating to selection of an option to insert a file within the composed email message;

in response to receiving input relating to selecting the option to insert the file, receive at least a portion of a list of files from a first server for display to the mobile device,

wherein the list identifies at least some files saved on a second device associated with a user account of the mobile device,

wherein the list of files is generated based on information received by the first server from the second device,

wherein the list of files represents less than all of the files stored on the second device,

process a selection to identify a file from the list,

wherein the selected file is associated with the composed email message,

wherein the selected file has a size that exceeds a capability to be uploaded within the email message composed on the mobile device;

associate an identifier with the selected file,

wherein the identifier is inserted into the email message as a hyperlink within the email message,

wherein less than a totality of the email message and selected file is sent through a first connection,

wherein the first connection is a connection that is maintained; and

transmit the composed email message and the identifier associated with the selected file in an email transaction,

wherein a second connection is established and the selected file is sent through the second connection in response to receipt of the less than a totality of the email message and selected file.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein a copy of the selected file does not remain on the mobile device after the composed email has been transmitted.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device but not stored on the mobile device.

4. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the first connection is a TCP/IP connection.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device, and a copy of the selected file is stored on the first server.

6. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the selected file is not attached to the composed email.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the selected file is not stored in memory on the mobile device.

8. A method for accessing content stored on a first server over a mobile network, the method comprising:

receive input at a mobile device relating to composition of an email message;

receive input relating to selection of an option to insert a file within the composed email message;

in response to receiving input relating to selecting the option to insert the file, receive at least a portion of a list of files from a first server for display to a mobile device,

wherein the list identifies at least some files saved on a second device associated with a user account of the mobile device;

wherein the list of files is generated based on information received by the first server from the second device,

wherein the list of files represents less than all of the files stored on the second device,

process a selection to identify a file from the list,

wherein the selected file is associated with the composed email message,

wherein the selected file has a size that exceeds a capability to be uploaded within the email message composed on the mobile device;

associate an identifier with the selected file,

wherein the identifier is inserted into the email message as a hyperlink within the email message,

wherein less than a totality of the email message and selected file is sent through a first connection,

wherein the first connection is a connection that is maintained;

transmit the composed email message and the identifier associated with the selected file in an email transaction,

wherein a second connection is established and the selected file is sent through the second connection in response to receipt of the less than a totality of the email message and selected file.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a copy of the selected file does not remain on the mobile device after the composed email has been transmitted.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device but not stored on the mobile device.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first connection is a TCP/IP connection.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device, and a copy of the selected file is stored on the first server.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the selected file is not attached to the composed email.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the selected file is not stored in memory on the mobile device.

15. A server in a mobile network communicating with a mobile device, the server comprising:

memory and a processor configured to direct the server to:

send at least a portion of a list of files for display to the mobile device, wherein the list identifies at least some files stored on the server and on a second device associated with a user account of the mobile device,

wherein the list of files is generated based on information received from the second device,

wherein the list of files represents less than all of the files stored on the second device,

wherein the list is sent in response to receiving input relating to composition of an email message at a mobile device and selection of an option to insert a file within the composed email message;

receive a selection from the mobile device to identify a file from the list,

wherein the selected file is associated with the composed email message,

wherein the selected file has a size that exceeds a capability to be uploaded within the email message composed on the mobile device,

wherein an identifier is associated with the selected file,

wherein the identifier is inserted into the email message as a hyperlink within the email message,

wherein less than a totality of the email message and selected file is sent through a first connection,

wherein the first connection is a connection that is maintained,

wherein the composed email message and the identifier associated with the selected file in an email transaction are transmitted,

wherein a second connection is established and the selected file is sent through the second connection in response to receipt of the less than a totality of the email message and selected file.

16. The server of claim 15 , wherein a copy of the selected file does not remain on the mobile device after the composed email has been transmitted.

17. The server of claim 15 , wherein the first connection is a TCP/IP connection.

18. The server of claim 15 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device.

19. The server of claim 15 , wherein a copy of the selected file is stored on the second device, and a copy of the selected file is stored on a management server through which the composed email is transmitted.

20. The server of claim 15 , wherein the selected file is not attached to the composed email.

21. The server of claim 15 , wherein the selected file is not stored in memory on the mobile device.
