Abstract

In general, the present invention relates to optical elements, which can be modified post-manufacture such that different versions of the element will have different optical properties. In particular, the present invention relates to lenses, such as intraocular lenses, which can be converted into aspheric lenses post-fabrication. Also, the present invention relates to a method for forming aspheric lenses post-fabrication.

Claims (41)

1. A method of forming an aspheric lens for presbyopia reduction by changing its shape, the method comprising:

providing a light-adjustable lens for a presbyopic eye with a positive ocular asphericity, the lens including

a first polymer matrix; and

a modifying composition,

dispersed in the first polymer matrix, and,

capable of photoinduced polymerization; and

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile described by

Profile(ρ)=SCN(ρ)+βAsph(ρ);

wherein

ρ is a normalized radial coordinate, β is a weighting factor sufficiently large to induce a negative asphericity in the lens large enough to overcompensate the positive ocular asphericity into a negative ocular asphericity, thereby reducing the presbyopia of the eye:

SCN(ρ) is one of a spherical, a spherocylindrical and a power neutral spatial irradiance profile; and

Asph(ρ)=Aρ 4 −Bρ 2 +1 is an asphericity-inducing irradiance profile,

in order to photoinduce polymerization in the modifying composition and thereby changing the shape of the lens into an aspheric lens having the negative asphericity and thereby an extended depth of focus.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

A=B=4.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein

β is in a range from 0 to 1.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein:

β is in a range from 0.05 to 0.57.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

β is in a range from 0.30 to 0.57.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

irradiating the aspheric lens with a second irradiation procedure to photoinduce polymerization in a remaining unpolymerized portion of the modifying composition.

7. The method of claim 1 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile so that after the irradiation a wavefront of the aspheric lens has a 4 th order spherical aberration at a 4 mm measurement aperture in a range from −0.006 μm to −0.285 μm.

8. The method of claim 1 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile so that after the irradiation a wavefront of the aspheric lens has a 4 th order spherical aberration at a 4 mm measurement aperture in a range from −0.04 μm to −0.010 μm.

9. The method of claim 1 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile so that after the irradiation a wavefront of the aspheric lens has a 4 th order spherical aberration at a 4 mm measurement aperture in a range from —0.010 μm to —0.23 μm.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the 4 th order spherical aberration is a Z(12) type aberration.

11. The method of claim 1 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile so that after the irradiation a wavefront of the aspheric lens has a magnitude of a 6 th order aberration at a 4 mm measurement aperture is smaller than 0.04 μm.

12. The method of claim 11 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens with a spatially defined irradiance profile so that after the irradiation a wavefront of the aspheric lens has a magnitude of a 6 th order aberration at a 4 mm measurement aperture is smaller than 0.01 μm.

13. The method of claim 1 , the providing comprising:

providing a modifying compound that includes one of a monomer and a macromer, with an endcapping that includes a photopolymerizable group to facilitate the photoinduced polymerization.

14. The method of claim 1 , the providing comprising:

providing a modifying compound that includes a photoinitiator to initiate a photoinduced polymerization of the photopolymerizable group.

15. The method of claim 14 , the irradiating comprising:

irradiating the lens in order to photoinduce the polymerization of the modifying composition into a second polymer matrix.
