Abstract

Systems and methods for communicating between components of a security and/or automation system include establishing a two-way call between a control panel and a central station of the security and/or automation system using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) channel connection, and after establishing the two-way call, communicating data between the central station and the control panel via a central station of the security and/or automation system via a second connection different from the VoIP channel connection, the data being related to control of the control panel.

Claims (45)

1. A method for communicating between components of a security and/or automation system, comprising:

establishing a two-way call between a control panel and a central station of the security and/or automation system using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) channel connection;

after establishing the two-way call, communicating using a voice call between the central station and the control panel via the VoIP channel connection;

concurrently receiving, at the control panel, a first portion of data from the central station via a second connection different from the VoIP channel connection, the first portion of the data being related to control of the control panel; and

transmitting a second portion of the data to the central station via the second connection different from the VoIP channel connection, the second portion of the data comprising feedback data generated in response to the first portion of the data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the second portion of the data includes transmitting the second portion of the data to the central station via a backend server of the security and/or automation system.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a trigger event; and

transmitting information about the trigger event to a backend server of the security and/or automation system via the second connection.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the trigger event is an alarm condition identified by the control panel.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a two-way call number stored at the control panel for use in establishing the two-way call.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the VoIP channel connection is available on a cellular network.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

delivering a request from the central station to the control panel for the control panel to initiate the two-way call.

8. An apparatus for communicating between components of a security and/or automation system, comprising:

a processor;

memory in electronic communication with the processor; and

instructions stored in the memory, the instructions being executable by the processor to:

establish a two-way call between a control panel and a central station of the security and/or automation system using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) channel connection;

while the two-way call is ongoing, communicate using a voice call between the central station and the control panel via the VoIP channel connection;

concurrently receive, at the control panel, a first portion of data from the central station via a second connection different from the VoIP channel connection, the first portion of the data being related to control of the control panel; and

transmit a second portion of the data to the central station over another connection different from the VoIP channel connection for control of the control panel, the second portion of the data comprising feedback data generated in response to the first portion of the data.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the instructions to transmit the second portion of the data are executable by the processor to:

transmit the second portion of the data to the central station via a backend server of the security and/or automation system.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are further executable by the processor to:

identify a trigger event; and

transmit information about the trigger event to a backend server of the security and/or automation system via the another connection.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the trigger event is an alarm condition identified by the control panel.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are further executable by the processor to:

identify a two-way call number stored at the control panel for use in establishing the two-way call.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the VoIP channel connection is available on a cellular network.

14. A method for communicating between components of a security and/or automation system, comprising:

identifying a trigger event;

establishing a two-way call directly between a control panel and a central station of the security and/or automation system over a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) channel connection using a stored two-way call number;

after establishing the two-way call, communicating using a voice call between the central station and the control panel via the VoIP channel connection;

concurrently receiving, at the control panel, a first portion of information from the central station via a second connection different from the VoIP channel connection, the first portion of the data being related to control of the control panel; and

transmitting a second portion of information about the trigger event to the central station of the security and/or automation system via the second connection, the second portion of the information comprising feedback data generated in response to the first portion of the data.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the trigger event includes a request from the central station to establish the two-way call.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

communicating data over the second connection associated with the VoIP channel connection during the two-way call.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the data is routed through a backend server to the central station via the second connection associated with the VoIP channel connection.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the trigger event includes a detected alarm condition at a property being monitored by the security and/or automation system.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the trigger event is identified by a control panel of the security and/or automation system, and the first portion of the information about the trigger event is transmitted from the control panel to a backend server via the second connection different from the VoIP channel connection.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising delivering a caller ID to the central station as part of establishing the two-way call.
