Abstract

Systems and methods provide for authenticating a user attempting to make a payment using a piezoelectric device are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, the piezoelectric device can be embedded on a credit card, debit card, or other form of payment card and signals generated by the piezoelectric device can be used to authenticate the user when making the payment. For example, the user can squeeze or manipulate the piezoelectric device in a specific predetermined pattern and the resulting electric charge or induced current generated by the piezoelectric device can facilitate transmitting a signal to a point of sale device, and the point of sale device can authenticate the user based on the signal. In other embodiments, the piezoelectric device can contain circuitry and/or logic that can authenticate the user and send a confirmation signal to the point of sale device to authenticate the payment.

Claims (30)

1. An authenticator device, comprising:

a piezoelectric effect material that generates an electromagnetic field in response to realizing mechanical stress, wherein a pattern of attenuation of the electromagnetic field associated with a user of the authenticator device is identified by an interaction between the user and the electromagnetic field generated by the piezoelectric effect material, wherein the pattern of attenuation results from modification of the electromagnetic field by the user's body composition;

an integrated circuit that facilitates matching the pattern of attenuation of the electromagnetic field to a predetermined pattern of attenuation of the electromagnetic field and generates identification information associated with the user; and

a nearfield transmitter that in response to matching the pattern of attenuation to the predetermined pattern of attenuation, transmits authentication data based on the identification information associated with the user to a nearfield receiver on a point of sale device that facilitates a financial transaction,

wherein the authenticator device comprises a payment card,

wherein the piezoelectric effect material is embedded on the payment card and generates an electric current in response to realizing mechanical stress and wherein the integrated circuit further comprises:

a first integrated transmission circuit that transmits financial transaction data to the point of sale device via a radio-frequency identification transmitter; and

a second integrated transmission circuit that transmits information associated with the electric current to the point of sale device, wherein the information associated with the electric current facilitates enabling the financial transaction associated with the financial transaction data.

2. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the nearfield transmitter is further configured to transmit the financial transaction data to the point of sale device that facilitates the financial transaction.

3. The authenticator device of claim 2 , wherein the financial transaction data is transmitted by the second integrated transmission circuit on the authenticator device.

4. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the authentication data facilitates enabling the financial transaction to be processed.

5. The authenticator device claim 1 , wherein the predetermined pattern of attenuation is based on data received from the piezoelectric effect material during a learning sequence.

6. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is configured to determine a direction of pressure received by the piezoelectric effect material based on the generated electromagnetic field.

7. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the information associated with the electric current is from a predetermined time period before the first integrated transmission circuit transmits the financial transaction data.

8. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the second integrated transmission circuit transmits the information associated with the electric current via the nearfield transmitter distinct from the radio-frequency identification transmitter.

9. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the body composition comprises at least one of skin composition information or grip information.

10. The authenticator device of claim 9 , wherein the skin composition information is based at least in part on a pattern of attenuation of the electromagnetic field generated by the piezoelectric effect material by a body part of the user.

11. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic field generated by the piezoelectric effect material is comprised of a series of charge, voltage, or current variations.

12. The authenticator device of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined pattern of attenuation is based on information received from the user.

13. An authenticator device, comprising:

a piezoelectric effect material generates an electromagnetic field that captures and identifies biometric data associated with a user, wherein the biometric data is identified by a unique pattern of attenuation associated with the user, wherein attenuation is caused by an interaction with a body part of the user and the electromagnetic field generated by the piezoelectric effect material;

an integrated circuit that facilitates matching the identified biometric data with stored identification information; and

a nearfield transmitter that in response to matching the identified biometric data, transmits authentication data to a nearfield receiver on a point of sale device that facilitates a financial transaction

wherein the authenticator device comprises a payment card,

wherein the piezoelectric effect material is embedded on the payment card and generates an electric current in response to realizing mechanical stress and wherein the integrated circuit further comprises:

a first integrated transmission circuit that transmits financial transaction data to the point of sale device via a radio-frequency identification transmitter; and

a second integrated transmission circuit that transmits information associated with the electric current to the point of sale device, wherein the information associated with the electric current facilitates enabling the financial transaction associated with the financial transaction data.

14. The authenticator device of claim 13 , wherein the identified biometric data comprises skin composition information or grip information.

15. The authenticator device of claim 14 , wherein the skin composition information is based at least in part on the pattern of attenuation of the electromagnetic field generated by the piezoelectric effect material by the body part of the user.

16. The authenticator device of claim 13 , wherein the second integrated transmission circuit transmits the information associated with the electric current via the nearfield transmitter distinct from the radio-frequency identification transmitter.
