Abstract

An aqueous dispersion contains pigment colorant particles (of various types of materials) at 5 weight % and up to and including 80 weight %; a dispersing polymer that is prepared from the Diels Alder adduct of 3-maleimidopropionic acid and furfuryl (meth)acrylate; and an aqueous medium. The weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 19:1 to and including 2:1. This aqueous dispersion can be incorporated into an aqueous inkjet ink composition that can be used in various inkjet printing methods to provide opaque images particularly when titanium dioxide particles are used as the pigment colorant.

Claims (27)

1. An aqueous dispersion comprising:

pigment colorant particles that are present in an amount of at least 5 weight % and up to and including 80 weight %;

a dispersing polymer that is prepared from the Diels Alder adduct of 3-maleimidopropionic acid and furfuryl (meth)acrylate; and

an aqueous medium,

wherein the weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 19:1 to and including 2:1.

2. The aqueous dispersion of claim 1 , wherein the pigment colorant particles are titanium dioxide particles.

3. The aqueous dispersion of claim 1 , wherein the weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 13:1 to and including 4:1.

4. The aqueous dispersion of claim 1 , wherein the dispersing polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 5,000 and up to and including 100,000, and an acid value of at least 100 and up to and including 500.

5. The aqueous dispersion of claim 1 , wherein the pigment colorant particles have a 95 th percentile particle size of less than 200 nm and a 50 th percentile particle size of less than 130 nm.

6. The aqueous dispersion of claim 1 , wherein:

the pigment colorant particles are titanium dioxide particles that have a 95 th percentile particle size of less than 200 nm and a 50 th percentile particle size of less than 130 nm;

the dispersing polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 5,000 and up to and including 100,000, and an acid value of at least 100 and up to and including 500; and

the weight ratio of the titanium dioxide particles to the dispersing polymer is from 9:1 to and including 5:1.

7. An aqueous inkjet ink composition, comprising:

pigment colorant particles that are present in an amount of at least 4 weight % and up to and including 15 weight %;

a dispersing polymer that is prepared from the Diels Alder adduct of 3-maleimidopropionic acid and furfuryl (meth)acrylate;

a humectant having a molecular weight of less than 1,000; and

an aqueous medium,

wherein the weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 19:1 to and including 2:1.

8. The aqueous inkjet ink composition of claim 7 , wherein the pigment colorant particles are titanium dioxide particles and the aqueous inkjet ink composition is capable of providing a white printed image.

9. The aqueous inkjet ink composition of claim 7 , wherein the weight ratio of the pigment colorant particles to the dispersing polymer is from 13:1 to and including 4:1.

10. The aqueous inkjet ink composition of claim 7 , wherein the dispersing polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 5,000 and up to and including 100,000, and an acid value of at least 100 and up to and including 500.

11. The aqueous inkjet ink composition of claim 7 , wherein the pigment colorant particles have a 95 th percentile particle size of less than 200 nm and a 50 th percentile particle size of less than 130 nm.

12. The aqueous inkjet ink composition of claim 7 , wherein:
