Abstract

A system comprises television equipment and a number of portable electronic devices. The television equipment includes a large display and control circuitry. The control circuitry receives media content and media guidance data for display on the display. The control circuitry also includes communication components for communicating with the portable electronic devices. The portable electronic devices are operable for displaying video and communicating with the television equipment. A method comprises the steps of receiving media guidance information with a first portable electronic device; transmitting at least some of the media guidance information from the first portable electronic device to the control circuitry of the television equipment; and displaying the media guidance information from the first portable electronic device on the display of the television equipment while simultaneously displaying media content or media guidance information received from a source other than the first portable electronic device.

Claims (75)

1. A method for displaying, on a display screen, media guidance information for multiple users, the method comprising:

receiving, at user equipment, a request to display media guidance information;

selecting a plurality of users associated with the user equipment;

retrieving a plurality of profiles each associated with a respective one of the plurality of users;

processing data stored in the plurality of profiles to select a plurality of sets of media guidance information corresponding to the data stored in the plurality of profiles, wherein each set of media guidance information corresponds to a respective one of the plurality of profiles;

associating a different sub-region of a plurality of sub-regions of the display screen with each of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

retrieving a first of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

selecting a first of the plurality of sub-regions that is associated with the first set of media guidance information;

directing the first set of media guidance information to the first sub-region;

retrieving a second of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

selecting a second of the plurality of sub-regions that is associated with the second set of media guidance information;

directing the second set of media guidance information to the second sub-region; and

generating for simultaneous display, on the display screen, the first set of media guidance information in the first sub-region and the second set of media guidance information in the second sub-region.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the plurality of users associated with the user equipment comprises receiving, at the user equipment, a plurality of user identifiers that identify the plurality of users.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein receiving the plurality of user identifiers comprises receiving the plurality of user identifiers from a plurality of portable electronic devices.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein retrieving the plurality of profiles comprises receiving, at the user equipment, the plurality of profiles from a plurality of portable electronic devices.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein processing the data stored in the plurality of profiles to select the plurality of sets of media guidance information corresponding to the data stored in the plurality of profiles comprises:

receiving a default set of media guidance information;

retrieving at least one first preference from a first of the plurality of profiles;

retrieving at least one second preference from a second of the plurality of profiles;

customizing the default set of media guidance information according to the at least one first preference to produce the first set of media guidance information; and

customizing the default set of media guidance information according to the at least one second preference to produce the second set of media guidance information.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the first set of media guidance information is different from at least a portion of the second set of media guidance information.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dividing the display screen into the plurality of sub-regions such that a number of the plurality of sub-regions equals a number of the plurality of users.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a third set of media guidance information that is not associated with a user of the plurality of users;

associating a third of the plurality of sub-regions of the display screen with the third set of media guidance information; and

directing the third set of media guidance information to the third sub-region.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a first selection of first media content, wherein the first media content is selected using the first set of media guidance information;

receiving a second selection of second media content, wherein the second media content is selected using the second set of media guidance information;

directing first audio signals associated with the first media content to a first portable electronic device; and

directing second audio signals associated with the second media content to a second portable electronic device.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first set of media guidance information is associated with a first of the plurality of users;

the second set of media guidance information is associated with a second of the plurality of users; and

the method further comprises transmitting at least a portion of the first set of media guidance information to a portable electronic device associated with the second user.

11. A system for displaying, on a display screen, media guidance information for multiple users, the system comprising:

input circuitry associated with user equipment, the input circuitry configured to:

receive a request to display media guidance information; and

control circuitry associated with the user equipment, the control circuitry configured to: select a plurality of users associated with the user equipment;

retrieve a plurality of profiles each associated with a respective one of the plurality of users;

process data stored in the plurality of profiles to select a plurality of sets of media guidance information corresponding to the data stored in the plurality of profiles, wherein each set of media guidance information corresponds to a respective one of the plurality of profiles;

associate a different sub-region of a plurality of sub-regions of the display screen with each of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

retrieve a first of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

select a first of the plurality of sub-regions that is associated with the first set of media guidance information;

direct the first set of media guidance information to the first sub-region;

retrieve a second of the plurality of sets of media guidance information;

select a second of the plurality of sub-regions that is associated with the second set of media guidance information;

direct the second set of media guidance information to the second sub-region; and

generate for simultaneous display, on the display screen, the first set of media guidance information in the first sub-region and the second set of media guidance information in the second sub-region.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when selecting the plurality of users associated with the user equipment, to receive, at the user equipment, using the input circuitry, a plurality of user identifiers that identify the plurality of users.

The system of claim 12 , further comprising a plurality of portable electronic devices, and wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when receiving, using the input circuitry, the plurality of user identifiers, to receive the plurality of user identifiers from the plurality of portable electronic devices.

The system of claim 11 , further comprising a plurality of portable electronic devices, and wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when retrieving the plurality of profiles, to receive, at the user equipment, using the input circuitry, the plurality of profiles from the plurality of portable electronic devices.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when processing the data stored in the plurality of profiles to select the plurality of sets of media guidance information corresponding to the data stored in the plurality of profiles, to:

receive a default set of media guidance information;

retrieve at least one first preference from a first of the plurality of profiles;

retrieve at least one second preference from a second of the plurality of profiles;

customize the default set of media guidance information according to the at least one first preference to produce the first set of media guidance information; and

customize the default set of media guidance information according to the at least one second preference to produce the second set of media guidance information.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the first set of media guidance information is different from at least a portion of the second set of media guidance information.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to divide the display screen into the plurality of sub-regions such that a number of the plurality of sub-regions equals a number of the plurality of users.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve a third set of media guidance information that is not associated with a user of the plurality of users;

associate a third of the plurality of sub-regions of the display screen with the third set of media guidance information; and

direct the third set of media guidance information to the third sub-region.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive a first selection of first media content, wherein the first media content is selected using the first set of media guidance information;

receive a second selection of second media content, wherein the second media content is selected using the second set of media guidance information;

direct first audio signals associated with the first media content to a first portable electronic device; and

direct second audio signals associated with the second media content to a second portable electronic device.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the first set of media guidance information is associated with a first of the plurality of users;

the second set of media guidance information is associated with a second of the plurality of users; and

the control circuitry is further configured to transmit from the user equipment at least a portion of the first set of media guidance information to a portable electronic device associated with the second user.
