Abstract

In order to produce a pulsatile blood flow pattern that includes time periods of relatively high blood flow rates and time periods of relatively low blood flow rates, the operating speed of a blood pump can be selectively controlled to produce an operating speed pattern that includes time periods of relatively high rotation speeds and periods of relatively low rotation speeds. For example, the blood pump is rotated at a first speed for a first period of time. The speed of the blood pump is then decreased from the first speed to a second speed and is operated at the second speed for a second amount of time. The speed of the blood pump is then decreased to a third speed for a third amount of time. If desired, the operating speed pattern can be repeated to continue the pulsatile blood flow pattern.

Claims (37)

1. A method for pumping blood, comprising:

operating a blood pump at a first speed for a first period of time;

reducing a speed of the blood pump from the first speed to a second speed;

returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed to a greater speed before returning to the first speed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more of reducing the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to the second speed and returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed includes a step-wise change in speed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first period of time is longer than a sum of a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed and a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed is longer than a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed comprises overshooting the first speed for one second or less.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed comprises overshooting the first speed for about one second.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating the blood pump in a cycle by repeating: the operating of the blood pump at the first speed for the first period of time; the reducing of the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to the second speed; and the returning of the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed to the greater speed before returning to the first speed.

The method of claim 7 , further comprising changing a frequency of the cycle by changing a duration of the first period of time and maintaining a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed and a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the generated waveform is configured to operate the blood pump in a pump speed pattern that allows an opening or closing or exercise of an aortic valve.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first speed is a constant speed portion that is clinician selected.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the constant speed portion is selected by the clinician to produce a desired volume flow rate through the blood pump.

12. A blood pump controller, comprising:

a waveform generator to generate a waveform for operating a blood pump; and

a drive waveform transmitter to supply the generated waveform to the blood pump,

wherein the generated waveform is configured to:

operate the blood pump at a first speed for a first period of time;

reduce the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to a second speed; and

return the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed to a greater speed before returning to the first speed.

13. The controller of claim 12 , wherein the generated waveform is configured to change the speed of the blood pump with a step-wise change in speed.

14. The controller of claim 12 , wherein the first period of time is longer than a sum of a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed and a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed.

15. The controller of claim 12 , wherein a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed is longer than a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed.

16. The controller of claim 12 , wherein the generated waveform returns the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed for one second or less.

17. The controller of claim 16 , wherein the generated waveform returns the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed for about one second.

18. The controller of claim 12 , wherein the generated waveform is configured to operate the blood pump in a cycle by repeating the operating of the blood pump at the first speed for the first period of time; the reducing of the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to the second speed; and the returning of the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed to the greater speed before returning to the first speed.

19. The controller of claim 18 , wherein the generated waveform is configured to operate the blood pump in a pump speed pattern that allows an opening or closing or exercise of an aortic valve.

20. The controller of claim 12 , wherein the first speed is a constant speed portion that is clinician selected.

21. The controller of claim 20 , wherein the constant speed portion is selected by the clinician to produce a desired volume flow rate through the blood pump.

22. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium encoded with instructions that, when executed by data processing apparatus, cause the data processing apparatus to perform operations comprising:

operating a blood pump at a first speed for a first period of time;

reducing the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to a second speed;

returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed by overshooting the first speed to a greater speed before returning to the first speed.

The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 22 , wherein the first period of time is longer than a sum of a second period of time in which the speed of the blood pump is reduced to the second speed and a duration of the overshoot of the first speed when returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed; and wherein the second period of time is longer than the duration of the overshoot of the first speed.

24. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 22 , wherein returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed comprises overshooting the first speed for one second or less.

25. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein returning the speed of the blood pump from the second speed to the first speed comprises overshooting the first speed for about one second.
