Abstract

A surgical suturing system comprises a shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends, and receiver on the distal end with a rotary drive. A cartridge is selectively attachable to and detachable from the receiver. The cartridge has a surgical needle, a length of suture connected to the needle, a needle driver operative to engage and move the needle relative the cartridge, a transmission operatively connected to the needle driver, and a torsional interface rotationally coupling the rotary drive to the transmission.

Claims (27)

1. A surgical suturing system, the system comprising:

a reusable instrument having a shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends, and a receiver on the distal end with a rotary drive comprising a first torsional coupling;

a disposable cartridge arranged as a modular unit configured for ready insertion into and removal from the receiver, the cartridge comprising a cartridge housing, a surgical needle, a length of suture connected to the needle, a needle driver operative to engage and move the needle relative the cartridge, a transmission operatively connected to the needle driver, and a second torsional coupling configured to rotationally join with the first torsional coupling such that the torsional couplings are axially aligned and maintain angular correspondence and thereby connect the rotary drive to the transmission.

2. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , wherein the rotary drive delivers a torque to the transmission through the first and second tortional coupling—about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

3. The surgical suturing system of claim 2 , wherein the rotary drive delivers the torque through the first and second torsional couplings about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

4. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises a distally extending arm axially off-set from the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

5. The surgical suturing system of claim 4 , wherein the arm comprises a medially facing deck.

6. The surgical suturing system of claim 4 , further comprising a second distally extending arm axially off-set from the longitudinal axis of the shaft, the arms defining a space dimensioned and adapted to receive the cartridge.

7. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , further comprising a latch operable to lock and unlock the cartridge to the receiver.

8. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge is inserted into and removed from the receiver by longitudinally sliding the cartridge relative to the receiver.

9. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , wherein the first torsional coupling comprises a key and the second torsional coupling comprises a slot dimensioned to mate with the key.

10. The surgical suturing system of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge housing and the receiver each comprise deck surfaces that are parallel and facing one another when the cartridge is inserted into the receiver.

11. A method of assembling the surgical suturing system of claim 1 , comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining the reusable instrument;

b) obtaining the disposable cartridge;

c) attaching the disposable cartridge into the receiver of the reusable instrument without substantially disassembling or reassembling the reusable instrument or the disposable cartridge such the first and second torsional couplings mate thereby transferring torque and maintaining axial alignment and the angular correspondence between the torsional couplings.

12. A surgical suturing system, the system comprising:

a shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends;

a receiver on the distal end of the shaft, the receiver comprising a pair of distally extending arms defining a space between the arms, one of the arms having a rotating drive with a first rotary coupling;

a cartridge arranged as a modular unit configured for ready insertion into and removal from the receiver by longitudinally sliding the cartridge in the space, the cartridge comprising a cartridge housing, a surgical needle, a length of suture connected to the needle, a needle driver operative to engage and move the needle relative the cartridge, and a transmission operably connected to the needle driver having a second rotary coupling configured to mate with the rotary coupling thereby transferring torque and maintaining axial alignment angular correspondence between the first and second rotary couplings; and

a latch selectively locking and unlocking the cartridge in the receiver.

13. A surgical suturing system, the system comprising:

a shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis between the proximal and distal ends, and a receiver on the distal end with a rotary drive;

a cartridge arranged as a modular unit configured for ready insertion into and removal from the receiver, the cartridge comprising a cartridge housing, a surgical needle, a length of suture connected to the needle, a needle driver operative to engage and move the needle relative the cartridge, and a transmission operatively connected to the needle driver; and

an axially aligned coupling means for rotationally connecting the rotary drive to the transmission.

14. The surgical suturing system of claim 13 , further comprising a means for attaching and detaching the cartridge to the receiver.

15. The surgical suturing system of claim 13 , further comprising a means for locking and unlocking the cartridge in the receiver.
