Abstract

Channel Optimization in Half Duplex Communications Systems is provided herein. Methods may include obtaining at a first terminal, radio frequency (RF) spectral information local to the first terminal, analyzing at the first terminal, RF spectral information for a second terminal that is not co-located with the first terminal, transmitting data to the second terminal on a second terminal optimal frequency band, and receiving data from the second terminal on the first terminal optimal frequency band, where the first terminal optimal frequency being based upon the RF spectral information local to the first terminal.

Claims (31)

1. A terminal device, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory for storing executable instructions, execution of the instructions causing the processor to:

determine radio frequency (RF) spectral information local to the terminal device;

analyze spectral information for one or more additional terminal devices in a network that are not co-located with the terminal device;

determine an optimal frequency band for each of the one or more additional terminal devices;

transmit data to the one or more additional terminal devices using the optimal frequency bands; and

receive data from the one or more additional terminal devices on an optimal frequency band that is based upon the RF spectral information local to the terminal device;

the terminal device being further configured to determine an optimal frequency band for each of the one or more additional terminal devices by analyzing RF spectral information for each of the one or more additional terminal devices to determine a signal-to-noise ratio, an error vector magnitude, an interference plus noise power spectrum, and an overlapping basic service set traffic activity.

2. The terminal device according to claim 1 , wherein management frames are utilized to establish pure time division duplexing (TDD) or TDD/frequency division duplexing (FDD) modes of operation.

3. The terminal device according to claim 1 , wherein when the terminal device is in TDD/FDD mode the optimal frequency band is selected such that a product of forward and reverse link throughput is maximized.

4. The terminal device according to claim 1 , wherein when the terminal device is in pure TDD mode the optimal frequency band for a first channel and the optimal frequency band for a second channel can be identical to one another.

5. The terminal device according to claim 4 , further comprising transmitting the data as data frames using half division duplexing (HDX).

6. The terminal device according to claim 1 , wherein management frames are transmitted at a periodic time interval, when triggered by degradation in link quality of a wireless link, or upon a request by the one or more additional terminal devices.

7. The terminal device according to claim 1 , wherein execution of the instructions further causes the processor to:

update the optimal frequency band for a first channel and the optimal frequency band for a second channel when a sum of a local interference value determined from the RF spectral information and a signal-to-noise ratio meets or exceeds a threshold value; and

execute a change to an updated optimal frequency band for the first channel or the second channel through a scheduled channel change between the terminal device and the one or more additional terminal devices on the network, wherein the one or more additional terminal devices are dual channel network devices.

8. A method, comprising:

measuring radio frequency (RF) spectral information local to a dual channel network device;

selecting at the device an optimal frequency band for a first channel based upon the RF spectral information;

selecting at the device an optimal frequency band for a second channel based upon the RF spectral information;

transmitting management frames that include the optimal frequency band of the first channel over a time division duplexing interface to one or more additional devices on a network over a wireless link;

transmitting the management frames that include the optimal frequency band of the second channel over a time division duplexing and frequency division duplexing interface to the one or more additional devices over the wireless link; and

receiving data from the one or more additional devices on either of the first and second channels.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein when receiving data on the second channel the optimal frequency band for the second channel is selected such that a product of forward and reverse link throughput is maximized.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein when the dual channel network device is in pure TDD mode the optimal frequency band for the first channel and the optimal frequency band for the second channel can be identical to one another.

11. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising transmitting the data as data frames using half division duplexing (HDX).

12. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the management frames are transmitted at a periodic time interval, when triggered by degradation in link quality of the wireless link, or upon request by the one or more additional devices.

13. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the method is executed over a period of time and the optimal frequency band for the first channel and the optimal frequency band for the second channel selectively change as the RF spectral information changes.

14. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising reselecting the optimal frequency band for the first channel and the optimal frequency band for the second channel when a sum of a local interference value determined from the RF spectral information and a signal-to-noise ratio meets or exceeds a threshold value.

15. The method according to claim 14 , further comprising executing a change to an updated optimal frequency band for the first channel or the second channel through a scheduled channel change between the dual channel network device and the one or more additional devices on the network.
