Abstract

Linerless labels are presented. A label includes a specific pattern or set of patterns of adhesive applied to one side of the label. The adhesive pattern(s) reduces contact between a cutter blade of a printer and the adhesive on the one side of the label. Moreover, the adhesive patterns reduce buildup of adhesive on the cutter blade and reduce buildup at specific locations on the cutter blade. That is, the adhesive patterns more evenly distribute adhesive buildup across the cutter blade. Consequently, the cutter blade can be used for a longer period of time before the cutter blade needs to be cleaned of the adhesive.

Claims (20)

1. A method comprising:

selecting, by a labeling process that executes on a press, a first location on a backside of a label for applying an adhesive coating, wherein the first location is a location that avoids coming into contact with a cutting mechanism when that the label is cut from a roll of labels; and

selecting, by the labeling process, at least one second location on the backside of the label for applying the adhesive coating, wherein the second location is a location that avoids coming into contact with the cutting mechanism when the label is cut from the roll, wherein the selecting the first location and the selecting of the second location further includes determining, by the labeling process the first and second locations based on a parameter provided to the labeling process for a printer having the cutting mechanism.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the first location further comprising identifying a first pattern for the adhesive coating by the labeling process.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the second location further comprising identifying the second pattern for the adhesive coating by the labeling process.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising, applying, by the labeling process, the first pattern of the adhesive coating and applying the second pattern of the adhesive coating to the backside at the first location and the second location.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising, repeating, by the labeling process, the application of the pattern of the first adhesive coating and the second pattern of the adhesive coating for a plurality of additional labels of the roll.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising, activating, by the labeling process, the cutting mechanism to separate the label from the roll.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising, applying, by the lab-ling process, a thermally-activated coating on a front side of the label.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising, applying a release coating on top of the thermally-activated coating on the front side of the label.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying the release coating further comprising applying the release coating in a pattern over the thermally-activated coating by the labeling process.

10. A method comprising:

configuring a printing press for applying adhesive coatings on a backside of a web representing a plurality of labels at locations on the backside that avoids contact with a cutting mechanism when each label is cut and separated from the roll as a particular individual label, wherein configuring further includes supplying a parameter for a printer having the cutting mechanism for locating, by the printing press, the adhesive coatings on the backside of the web; and

activating the printing press for producing a roll of individual labels having the adhesive locations on the backside of each label at the locations.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying a thermally-activated coating on a front side of each of the labels within the web.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying a release coating over the thermally-activated coating on the front side of each of the labels within the web.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying the release coating in spot patterns over the thermally-activated coating on the front side of each of the labels within the web.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying the adhesive coating in a predefined shape that repeats for each label.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying the adhesive coating in randomized adhesive patterns between each label.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein configuring further includes configuring the printing press for applying the adhesive coating in randomized lengths on the backside between each label.
