Abstract

Method and apparatus for treatment of morbid obesity by placement of a series of flow reduction elements in the small intestine to induce satiety are disclosed. The flow reduction elements restrict the movement of partially digested food and reduce the flow rate through the small intestine which causes the emptying of the stomach and the duodenum to occur slower. The flow reduction elements are attached to an elongated tube and are constructed from various shapes and configurations. The flow reduction elements may be inflated with fluid or may be constructed from self-expandable materials. The device is anchored in the antrum of the stomach with an anchoring member. The transoral gastric device can be inserted with a delivery catheter through the working lumen of an endoscope or alongside an endoscope and may be removed with the aid of an endoscope if desired.

Claims (14)

1. An intestinal insert for treating obesity in humans, comprising:

an elongated shaft having a curved longitudinal axis;

an anchor attached to a proximal end of the elongated shaft and configured to be placed in an antrum of a patient's stomach; and

a sleeve positioned around the elongated shaft, wherein the sleeve is configured to expand at a plurality of discrete locations to form a plurality of expandable flow restriction elements, wherein a distal portion of the sleeve is attached to the elongated shaft at a distal attachment point;

wherein each of the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements is spaced away from the anchor such that when the anchor is in the antrum, the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements are positioned within a small intestine.

2. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements has a shape expandable from a collapsed form sized to fit in an endoscope working channel to an expanded form sized to occupy between 30% and 80% of a small intestine diameter of an average adult human.

3. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements are configured to reduce the flow rate of chyme in the small intestine.

4. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements encircles the elongated shaft.

5. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements is arranged concentrically about the elongated shaft.

6. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein the insert is configured to generate a hormonal signal of satiety when the plurality of expandable flow restriction elements are placed in a small intestine.

7. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is configured to self-expand after insertion in the gastrointestinal tract.

8. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft is configured to adapt a straightened configuration for insertion into the gastrointestinal tract with an endoscope.

9. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein a proximal portion of the sleeve is configured to slide in relation to the elongated shaft.

10. The intestinal insert of claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft has a pre-set shape prior to insertion in the gastrointestinal tract such that a portion of the curved longitudinal axis mimics an angulation of a gastrointestinal tract duodenum and returns to the pre-set shape after insertion into the gastrointestinal tract.
