Abstract

A green simulation apparatus having a configurable upper surface with a changeable contour may comprise a covering forming the upper surface and a covering support assembly configured to support the covering. The support assembly may comprise a plurality of movable positioning elements having the covering resting thereon and positioned in an array extending in a reference plane and movable along axes extending substantially perpendicular to the reference plane. The support assembly may comprise a movement actuator configured to move at least one of the positioning elements independently of other positioning elements in the array.

Claims (43)

1. A green simulation apparatus having a configurable upper surface with a changeable contour, the apparatus comprising:

a covering forming the upper surface;

a covering support assembly configured to support the covering, the support assembly comprising:

a plurality of movable positioning elements having the covering resting thereon, the plurality of positioning elements being positioned in an array extending in a reference plane; and

a movement actuator configured to move at least one of the positioning elements independently of other positioning elements in the array;

wherein at least one of the positioning elements comprises a head and a support frame supporting the head in manner permitting movement of the head movable along an axis extending substantially perpendicular to the reference plane, the support frame including at least two frame members pivotally connected together such that convergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a first direction with respect to the reference plane and divergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a second direction with respect to the reference plane, and

the at least one positioning element comprising a bottom element with the support frame being positioned between the head and the bottom element, the support frame being configured to adjust a distance between the head and bottom element;

wherein the support frame is at least partially supported on an upper surface of the bottom element by at least one wheel configured to roll over the upper surface as the frame members pivot with respect to each other.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one support wheel is mounted on a lower end of one of the frame members to support the frame member on the bottom element.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two frame members of the support frame includes four frame members, two of the frame members being pivotally connected together in a pair of frame members, upper ends of the frame members of each pair being pivotally mounted on the head and lower ends of the frame members of each pair each having a support wheel rotatably mounted thereon and resting on the bottom element to permit rolling contact between the support frame and the bottom element as the frame members pivot with respect to each other.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the head of the positioning element includes a support element and a support disk positioned above the support element, the frame members of the support frame being pivotally mounted on the support element.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the support frame comprises at least one leveling member configured to facilitate a level orientation of the support disc, the leveling member being mounted in parallel with one of the frame members of the support frame.

6. A green simulation apparatus having a configurable upper surface with a changeable contour, the apparatus comprising:

a covering forming the upper surface;

a covering support assembly configured to support the covering, the support assembly comprising:

a plurality of movable positioning elements having the covering resting thereon, the plurality of positioning elements being positioned in an array extending in a reference plane;

a movement actuator configured to move at least one of the positioning elements independently of other positioning elements in the array;

wherein at least one of the positioning elements comprises a head and a support frame supporting the head in manner permitting movement of the head movable along an axis extending substantially perpendicular to the reference plane, the support frame including at least two frame members pivotally connected together such that convergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a first direction with respect to the reference plane and divergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a second direction with respect to the reference plane;

the support frame of the at least one positioning element includes a pair of support nuts and an actuating rod engaging the support nuts such that rotation of the actuating rod moves the support nuts toward and away from each other, one of the frame members being mounted on each of the support nuts such that rotation of the actuating rod in a first rotational direction moves the frame members toward convergence and rotation of the actuating rod in a second and opposite rotational direction moves the frame members toward divergence to raise a vertical level of a top surface of the head; and

at least one actuating rod mount configured to mount the actuating rod on a bottom element in a manner permitting rotation of the rod with respect to the bottom element.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein

each of the support nuts is linked to two of the frame members by a support link extending between the two frame members and connected to one of the support nuts, a support wheel being mounted at opposite ends of the support link such that the support link, the support nut and the two frame members are supported on the bottom element by the support wheels.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the actuating rod has a threaded exterior, and each of the support nuts has an aperture with a threaded surface configured to engage the threaded exterior surface of the threaded rod.

9. A green simulation apparatus having a configurable upper surface with a changeable contour, the apparatus comprising:

a covering forming the upper surface;

a covering support assembly configured to support the covering, the support assembly comprising:

a plurality of movable positioning elements having the covering resting thereon, the plurality of positioning elements being positioned in an array extending in a reference plane; and

a movement actuator configured to move at least one of the positioning elements independently of other positioning elements in the array;

wherein at least one of the positioning elements comprises:

a head;

a bottom element for resting on a support surface; and

a support frame positioned between the bottom element and head to support and raise the head with respect to the bottom element, the support frame including at least two frame members pivotally connected together such that convergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a first direction with respect to the reference plane and divergence of the frame members produces movement of the head in a second direction with respect to the reference plane;

wherein the movement actuator is positioned adjacent to the bottom element and is connected to at least one of the frame members to pivot one of the frame members with respect to another one of the frame members to move the head of the positioning element.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the movement actuator is mounted on the bottom element to remain adjacent to the bottom element during movement of the frame members.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the movement actuator is connected to a bottom end of the at least one frame member.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the movement actuator is connected to bottom ends of each of the at least two frame members of the support frame.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein a bottom end of a said frame member of the at least two frame members translates along the bottom element.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the movement actuator is connected to said frame member toward the bottom end of the said frame member to cause translational movement of the bottom end.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the at least one positioning element comprises:

at least one support link positioned adjacent to the bottom element and connected to one of the at least two frame members; and

an actuating rod positioned adjacent to the bottom element and connecting the at least one support link to the movement actuator such that the movement actuator translates the support link along a portion of the bottom element to move the one frame member.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the movement actuator and actuating rod extend substantially parallel to the bottom element.

17. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the at least two frame members of the support frame of the at least one positioning element are elongated with opposite upper and lower ends, the at least two frame members being pivotally connected together at respective said upper ends of the frame members.
