Abstract

A formulation includes a polymeric material, a nucleating agent, a blowing, and a surface active agent. The formulation can be used to form a container.

Claims (41)

1. A container comprising:

a sleeve-shaped sidewall having an outer tab overlapping an inner tab, the sidewall comprising an insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material; and

a floor joined to at least a portion of the sidewall, the sidewall and the floor defining an interior region having an open end, and the sidewall having a length extending from the floor to the open end;

the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material including:

a first polymer material comprising high melt strength polypropylene having long chain branching, and

a second polymer material comprising at least one of polypropylene and polyethylene,

the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material having a thermal conductivity to density ratio of about 0.3, wherein thermal conductivity is expressed in W/m−K at about 21° C. and density is expressed in g/cm 3 ; and

the sleeve-shaped sidewall of the container having a rigidity to density ratio of about 1.5 to about 2.6 for a sidewall thickness of about 0.064 inches to about 0.0744 inches when the container is filled with a liquid of about 93.3° C., wherein density is expressed in g/cm 3 and rigidity is expressed in kg-force as measured about one-third of the length of the sleeve-shaped sidewall from the open end over a travel distance of about 0.25 inches over a travel time of about 10 seconds.

2. The container of claim 1 , wherein the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material has a density of about 0.15 g/cm 3 to about 0.19 g/cm 3 .

3. The container of claim 1 , wherein the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material has a density of about 0.155 g/cm 3 to about 0.1902 g/cm 3 .

4. The container of claim 1 , wherein the inner tab of the sleeve-shaped sidewall has a first density, portions of the sleeve-shaped sidewall apart from the inner tab have a second density, and the second density is lower than the first density.

5. The container of claim 1 , wherein the second polymer material comprises at least one of a polypropylene copolymer and a polypropylene homopolymer.

The container of claim 1 , wherein the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material has a density of about 0.155 g/cm 3 to about 0.182 g/cm 3 and wherein the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material is an extrudate, and cells of the extrudate have a first dimension along a first axis and a second dimension along a second axis, the second axis is normal to the first axis, and wherein an average ratio of the first dimension to the second dimension is about 1.5 to about 3.0.

7. The container of claim 6 , wherein the cells of the extrudate have an average aspect ratio of between about 1.0 and about 3.0 along the first axis.

8. The container of claim 7 , wherein the sleeve-shaped sidewall defines a circumference of the open end and the circumference is aligned with the first axis.

9. The container of claim 6 , wherein the cells of the extrudate have an average aspect ratio of between about 1.0 and about 2.0 along the second axis.

10. The container of claim 9 , wherein the sleeve-shaped sidewall defines a circumference of the open end and the circumference is aligned with the second axis.

The container of claim 1 , wherein the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric material is an extrudate, and cells of the extrudate have a first dimension along a first axis and a second dimension along a second axis, the second axis is normal to the first axis, and wherein an average ratio of the first dimension to the second dimension is about 1.5 to about 3.0.

12. The container of claim 11 , wherein the cells of the extrudate have an average aspect ratio of between about 1.0 and about 2.0 along the second axis.

13. The container of claim 12 , wherein the sleeve-shaped sidewall defines a circumference of the open end and the circumference is aligned with the second axis.

14. The container of claim 13 , wherein the sleeve-shaped sidewall has a first surface facing the interior region and a second surface opposite the first surface and the first surface substantially lacks creases with a depth exceeding about 200 microns.

The container of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve-shaped sidewall has a first surface facing the interior region and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first surface is characterized by a first polymer crystal domain size, the second surface is characterized by a second polymer crystal domain size, and the first polymer crystal domain size is smaller than the second polymer crystal domain size.

16. The container of claim 15 , wherein the first polymer crystal domain size is less than about 200 angstroms.

17. The container of claim 16 , wherein the container further includes a rolled brim at the open end of the interior region.

18. The container of claim 17 , wherein the second density is about 0.05 g/cm 3 to about 0.19 g/cm 3 .

19. An insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate comprising:

a first polymer material comprising high melt strength polypropylene having long chain branching,

a second polymer material comprising at least one of polypropylene and polyethylene, and

the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate having a thermal conductivity to density ratio of about 0.3, wherein thermal conductivity is expressed in W/m−K at about 21° C. and density is expressed in g/cm 3 ; and

the insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate having a tear resistance of between about 2 grams-force/mil thickness to about 3.5 grams-force/mil thickness according to ASTM D1922-93 with a tear radius of about 1.7 inches.

20. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein the extrudate has a thickness of about 0.089 inches.

21. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein the extrudate has a density of about 0.155 g/cm 3 to about 0.1902 g/cm 3 .

The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein cells of the extrudate have a first dimension along a first axis and a second dimension along a second axis, the second axis is normal to the first axis, and wherein an average ratio of the first dimension to the second dimension is about 1.5 to about 3.0.

23. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein the second polymer material comprises at least one of a polypropylene copolymer and a polypropylene homopolymer.

The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein cells of the extrudate have a first dimension along a first axis and a second dimension along a second axis, the second axis is normal to the first axis, and an average length of the first dimension is greater than an average length of the second dimension, and wherein the extrudate has a tear resistance of between about 213 grams-force and about 351 grams-force along the first axis for an extrudate thickness of about 0.089 inches according to ASTM D1922-93 with a tear radius of about 1.7 inches.

25. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 24 , wherein the extrudate has a tear resistance of between about 143 grams-force and about 281 grams-force along the second axis for an extrudate thickness of about 0.089 inches according to ASTM D1922-93 with a tear radius of about 1.7 inches.

The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein cells of the extrudate have a first dimension along a first axis and a second dimension along a second axis, the second axis is normal to the first axis, and wherein an average ratio of the first dimension to the second dimension is about 1.5 to about 3.0.

27. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 26 , wherein the cells of the extrudate have an average aspect ratio of between about 1.0 and about 3.0 along the first axis.

28. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 27 , wherein cells of the extrudate have an average aspect ratio of between about 1.0 and about 2.0 along the second axis.

29. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 19 , wherein the extrudate has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first surface being characterized by a first polymer crystal domain size, the second surface being characterized by a second polymer crystal domain size, and the first polymer crystal domain size being smaller than the second polymer crystal domain size.

30. The insulative cellular non-aromatic polymeric extrudate of claim 29 , wherein the first polymer crystal domain size is less than about 200 angstroms.
