Abstract

An emission control system is provided for diesel engines operated on ocean-going ships at-berth that may be easily installed and removed from on ocean-going ships (or vessels) while at-berth. The emission control system is arranged within a housing sized to fit within space allocated for standard shipping containers. The emission control system has an inlet for receiving exhaust from a ships engine, cleans the exhaust and then passes the exhaust through an exhaust outlet connected to the ships stacks.

Claims (25)

1. An emissions control system for filtering exhaust for a ship, the emissions control system comprising:

(a) a housing, where the emissions control system is positioned within the housing;

(b) an exhaust inlet for receiving the ship's diesel engine exhaust, the exhaust inlet having at least one damper;

(c) an exhaust outlet for connecting to the ship's exhaust stack outlet such that the ship's exhaust stack outlet emits the filtered exhaust that is emitted from the exhaust outlet of the emissions control system;

(d) a filter positioned within the emissions control system, where the filter collects deposits from the ship's diesel engine exhaust; and

(e) a waste catch for capturing the deposits that fall off the filter.

2. The system of claim 1 where the housing has a footprint that is equal to or less than 53 feet long and 9 feet wide.

3. The system of claim 2 where the housing is equal to or less than 10 feet high.

4. The system of claim 2 where the housing is equal to or less than 30 feet high.

5. The system of claim 2 where the housing is 40 feet long, 8 feet wide and 25.5 feet tall.

6. The system of claim 1 where the filter is ceramic.

7. The system of claim 1 where the filter is comprised of at least one ceramic filter element.

8. The system of claim 1 where the waste catch is positioned underneath the filter.

9. The system of claim 1 , where the housing includes an upper and lower level and where the upper level and lower includes a platform that allows a user access inside both the upper and lower level of the housing.

10. The system of claim 1 , where the housing includes an upper and lower level and where the waste catch is located on the lower level.

11. An emissions control system for filtering exhaust for a ship, the emissions control system comprising:

(a) a housing, where the emissions control system is positioned within the housing;

(b) a utility duct assembly having an exhaust inlet and exhaust outlet, where the exhaust inlet is accessible from the housing and connects to the ship's exhaust system for receiving the ships exhaust and where the exhaust outlet is accessible from the housing and connects to the ship's exhaust stack outlet such that the ship's exhaust stack outlet emits the filtered exhaust that is emitted from the exhaust outlet of the emissions control system, the exhaust inlet having at least one damper for permitting the exhaust from the ship's exhaust system to enter the emissions control system when the ship is at-berth and allowing the exhaust from the ship's exhaust system to bypass the emissions control system when the ship is at sea; and

(c) the emissions control system further including a filter housing connected to the utility duct assembly between the exhaust inlet and exhaust outlet of the utility duct assembly for treating the ships exhaust.

12. The system of claim 11 where the filter housing includes at least one ceramic filter.

13. The system of claim 11 further including a waste catch positioned underneath the filter housing.

14. An emissions control system for filtering exhaust for a ship, the emissions control system comprising:

(a) a housing, where the emissions control system is positioned within the housing;

(b) a utility duct assembly having an exhaust inlet and exhaust outlet, where the exhaust inlet is accessible from the housing and connects to the ship's exhaust system for receiving the ships exhaust and where the exhaust outlet is accessible from the housing and connects to the ship's exhaust stack outlet such that the ship's exhaust stack outlet emits the filtered exhaust that is emitted from the exhaust outlet of the emissions control system, the exhaust inlet having at least one damper for permitting the exhaust from the ship's exhaust system to enter the emissions control system when the ship is at-berth and allowing the exhaust from the ship's exhaust system to bypass the emissions control system when the ship is at sea; and

(c) the emissions control system further including a filter housing connected to the utility duct assembly between the exhaust inlet and exhaust outlet of the utility duct assembly for treating the ships exhaust, aqueous ammonia storage, dry sorbet storage, and a waste catch positioned below the filter housing for collecting deposits from the ships exhaust and aqueous ammonia and dry sorbet storage.
