Claims (38)

1. A lawn mower comprising:

an engine for driving a plurality of rotating cutting blades that are part of a cutter deck structure; and

wherein the cutter deck structure comprises a diverter edge at a side of the cutter deck structure, the diverter edge extending downwardly to an elevation below an elevation at which a lowermost portion of a leading edge of the cutter deck structure is provided in order to help reduce occurrences of long vegetation from sliding around a side of the cutter deck structure during mowing operations, and

wherein the diverter edge is configured so that a lowermost portion of the diverter edge is configured to be permanently located above a bottommost portion of a most closely adjacent wheel of the mower but below the lowermost portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure during mowing operations, and wherein the diverter edge is not located laterally outwardly of a portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

2. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is not provided along the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

3. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is configured so that grass at an elevation lower than the elevation at which the lowermost portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure is provided will contact the diverter edge without contacting the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

4. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is provided at an outermost portion of the cutter deck structure so that no structure is provided outwardly of the diverter edge relative to the cutting blades.

5. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is configured so that when the mower is moving in a forward direction no blade of the mower is provided between the diverter edge and oncoming grass that contacts the diverter edge.

6. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the mower comprises first and second cutting blades, wherein the first cutting blade is the blade closest to the diverter edge, and wherein the diverter edge is located outwardly of a trim baffle that substantially surrounds the first cutting blade.

7. The lawn mower of claim 6 , wherein the cutter deck structure further comprises a plurality of baffle teeth defined at a bottom edge of the trim baffle that substantially surrounds the first cutting blade, wherein at least some of the baffle teeth are located proximate to and forward of the diverter edge.

8. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is provided at a side of the cutter deck structure opposite a side of the cutter deck structure at which a side discharge opening is provided, and wherein no diverter edge is provide at the side of the cutter deck structure at which the side discharge opening is provided.

9. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein substantially the entire diverter edge extends rearwardly in a direction substantially parallel to a forward travel direction of the mower so that the diverter edge is oriented substantially perpendicular to the ground.

10. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the cutter deck structure further comprises a plurality of baffle teeth located forward of the diverter edge.

11. The lawn mower of claim 1 , wherein the diverter edge is located at a most laterally outward edge of the cutter deck structure relative to a forward mowing direction so as to reduce a likelihood of long grass from sliding around the edge of the cutter deck structure.

12. A lawn mower comprising:

an engine for driving a plurality of rotating cutting blades that are part of a cutter deck structure;

wherein the cutter deck structure comprises a diverter edge at a side of the cutter deck structure, the diverter edge extending downwardly to an elevation below an elevation at which a leading edge of the cutter deck structure is provided in order to help reduce occurrences of long vegetation from sliding around a side of the cutter deck structure during mowing operations;

wherein a lowermost portion of the diverter edge is configured to extend straight downwardly toward the ground, and

wherein the diverter edge is configured so that the lowermost portion of the diverter edge is configured to be permanently located above a bottommost portion of a most closely adjacent wheel of the mower but below the lowermost portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure during mowing operations, and wherein the diverter edge is not located laterally outwardly of a portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

13. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the diverter edge is not provided along the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

14. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the diverter edge is configured so that grass at an elevation lower than the elevation at which a lowermost portion of the leading edge of the cutter deck structure is provided will contact the diverter edge without contacting the leading edge of the cutter deck structure.

15. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the diverter edge is provided at an outermost portion of the cutter deck structure so that no structure is provided outwardly of the diverter edge relative to the cutting blades.

16. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the mower comprises first and second cutting blades, wherein the first cutting blade is the blade closest to the diverter edge, and wherein the diverter edge is located outwardly of a trim baffle that substantially surrounds the first cutting blade.

17. The lawn mower of claim 16 , wherein the cutter deck structure further comprises a plurality of baffle teeth defined at a bottom edge of the trim baffle that substantially surrounds the first cutting blade, wherein at least some of the baffle teeth are located proximate to and forward of the diverter edge.

18. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the diverter edge is provided at a side of the cutter deck structure opposite a side of the cutter deck structure at which a side discharge opening is provided, and wherein no diverter edge is provide at the side of the cutter deck structure at which the side discharge opening is provided.

19. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein substantially the entire diverter edge extends rearwardly in a direction substantially parallel to a forward travel direction of the mower so that the diverter edge is oriented substantially perpendicular to the ground.

20. The lawn mower of claim 12 , wherein the diverter edge is located at a most laterally outward edge of the cutter deck structure relative to a forward mowing direction so as to reduce a likelihood of long grass from sliding around the edge of the cutter deck structure.

21. The lawn mower of claim 12 , further comprising at least one belt and a plurality of pulleys are mounted at a top surface of the cutter deck structure.

22. A lawn mower comprising:

an engine for driving a plurality of rotating cutting blades that are part of a cutter deck structure;

wherein the cutter deck structure comprises a diverter edge at a side of the cutter deck structure, the diverter edge extending downwardly to an elevation below an elevation at which a leading edge of the cutter deck structure is provided in order to help reduce occurrences of long vegetation from sliding around a side of the cutter deck structure during mowing operations;
