. A composition for isolating pathogen from a heterogeneous sample, the composition comprising:
a plurality of sets of magnetic particles, members of different sets being conjugated to different antibodies that are specific for a pathogen; and
a buffer that reduces particle aggregation.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein each set is present at a concentration designed for detection of a specific pathogen in said sample.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the particles are differently labeled.
. The composition of claim 23 , wherein the label is an optical label.
. The composition of claim 24 , wherein the optical label is a fluorescent label.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the antibodies are monoclonal antibodies.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the antibodies are polyclonal antibodies.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the pathogen are gram positive bacteria.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the pathogen are gram negative bacteria.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the pathogen are gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
. The composition of claim 21 , wherein the composition comprises a second antibody to which is attached.
. A plurality of magnetic particles within a buffer that reduces particle aggregation, wherein the plurality is differently functionalized so that the plurality of particles bind to a plurality of different pathogens in a heterogeneous sample.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the particles are differently labeled.
. The particles of claim 33 , wherein the label is an optical label.
. The particles of claim 34 , wherein the optical label is a fluorescent label.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the antibodies are monoclonal antibodies.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the antibodies are polyclonal antibodies.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the pathogen are gram positive bacteria.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the pathogen are gram negative bacteria.
. The particles of claim 32 , wherein the pathogen are gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
